I was so happy to be back home in Mt. Shasta on April 11th. As I drove up Interstate 5 near Dunsmuir, I noticed how high the Upper Sac was and realized that we had received lots and lots of snow this pass winter. It was the most snow on Mt Shasta I had ever seen. So I unloaded my bags, paid some bills and started getting the raft ready for some high water cruising. I knew the river probably wouldn't fish that good being it was at 5000 cubic feet per second, but that's ok. I have friends and guides who like to raft and try their luck at any water level. Just getting out is reason enough to inflate the raft, and the 5 foot standing waves are so fun to crash through as the water drips off your back washing away the cabin fever that layers one's mind, creating a new outlook on life! For the magic season is upon us now and that means it's time to make plans for the spring and summer. I hope to see you this year in my Sotar raft. I bought another one just in case we have more than one group! So there you go Sizzlers, give me a call and let's get the dates set! 530-926-4540 Jack Trout

Heading down Dunsmuir Avenue I could see that spring was trying to make its way back little by little. The leaves were like me, leaving for the winter only to return when the sun was at the right angle. I was as excited as the leaves on the trees to be back on my home turf, driving down the main drag in Dunsmuir, California with a raft strapped to the back of my rig. It was like old times again, the way I spend every spring in Mt Shasta, with a raft, some customers or friends and a fly rod.....

RAFTY DOGONIT! looked good framed and all, she was ready to do her job!

There was another group of Mt Shasta rafters getting ready to run the course!

It was a typical spring, the edges of the river like always exposed and holding feeding rainbows while the middle of the river was angry, loud and obnoxious!

I took my good friend and head guide Mike Hibbard out rafting, and he immediately hooked into a respectable trout.

Gets the juices flowing!! Nice trout Mike!

Mike commented how great it was just being out floating and seeing something other than rain and flooded rivers....

Down in the Pollard Canyon there were places to fish and catch!

Double Dip Falls was out in full force!

Out one day with Carl Anderson and Aaron Martin proved to be worthwhile! Can you make a bigger smile? Not likely Vern!

Greg or Mike Brady??

Carl, you're happy, I'm happy bro! Thanks for a great day, Jolly Rancher!

I'm all for this trickle down theory, it makes sense! Looking at this wall of lushness was a river highlight that day, the only thing missing was Neil Young's harmonica in the background!

Aaron Greener came along one day and caught over 20 trout in flows over 5000 C.F.S!

Respectable! Let's do it again!

My neighbor, Doug, and Mike went out with me one day and we saw stoneflies!

Everywhere is a view shot when you're sitting in my raft!

Can you see the Woman in the mountain? She's looking straight up! jt

Tom and Woody Lomas, came to town and we had three great days together! One day on the Lower Sac and the 2nd and 3rd days on the Upper Sac and Hat Creek! Tom's best day was on the Upper Sac, where he caught 3 trout in this one spot!

Nice trout for high water!

Tom is from Quincy, California near Portola where I grew up! Tom Lomas, what a good guy to be out on the river with!

We saw a bull snake on the rock, happy the sun was finally out. (not poisonous)

I even saw some showy phlox this early in spring on the shady part of the river! (That's acting a little desperate for spring-sun!)

Then Woody, Tom's brother, hooked into a very nice trout that took him on a big time fight!

By the amount of time it took reeling it in, we could tell it was a nice hook-up. Way to go Woody!!

And like that Woody was crowned Sizzler of the week! CONGRATULATIONS WOODY LOMAS, YOU'RE THE SIZZLER OF THE WEEK AWARD WINNER!!! CONGRATULATIONS SIZZLER!! I HAD A GREAT TIME WITH YOU AND TOM, LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU BACK!! MORE ADVENTURES TO COME ON THE UPPER SACRAMENTO RIVERS, LOWER SACRAMENTO AND HAT CREEK. STAY TUNED AND THANKS FOR WATCHING. EMAILS FROM YOU!
Jack: Yvonne tells me she is primed and ready to defend her winning streak over her dad; I'll let her win early (build a little overconfidence) and mount a stealth attack as the day wears on. We will be staying at the Best Western in Mt. Shasta. Lois will again join us as she loves the area--and want's to do some hiking (easy stuff) in the Castle Craigs area. Let me know time and location to meet Mon AM Regards, Chuck Persyn
Hi Jack, Yes, the 22nd and 23rd are doable. Shirley says she will skip therapy that Monday and we'll do it! She can work out in the hotel pool instead. I'm Stoked! See you then. Mike Foster
