One evening after fishing all day and catching trout on the Rio Petrohue, Bob McEwan decided to try his luck out in front of the lodge after seeing numerous small trout rising to a may fly hatch that comes up on non-windy days at sunset on Lago Llanquihue.
The first day Gary and Bob fished on the Rio Petrohue, and Gary landed this nice McCloud Rainbow. After Bob caught a dozen, and Gary caught eight or more, we stopped and ate some lunch as the rain misted the air annoucing a storm was on its way. The wind showed its speed and we were in for a week of playing chess with the weather but not before Bob caught more trout on drys near a raft put in, full of trout you could see with your bare eyes. (Don't site trout naked put on some polarized lenses Sizzlers!)

It didn't take long for Bob to get hooked up on a nice hard fighting Brown Trout!

Nice brown Bob, way to go! A lot of cast in one day, maybe as many as 1500 cast or more on the Rio Maullin, we used sink tips with minnow imitations to catch these browns.
When we catch a bigger trout I have found it more effective to release the trout by using my thumb. If the trout is very tired, it is not good to hold the trout with both hands and run him back in forth to generate oxygenated water through his gills. I found that by having the trout in some current and by placing my thumb near the trout's lip, the trout will hold on to my thumb naturally and release himself when he's ready. (A Seth Norman hand net works good also!) jt

Always good to see these guys out on our adventures! The Chilean Carabineros are the most friendly and courteous police officers in the world. I can't count how many times I have needed directions in any city in Chile, and these guys would go out of their way to help me, or one of my customers. These two guys are avid fly fishers themselves and friends of Francisco and I, out checking on how we were doing!

After seeing the Carabineros our luck changed for the rest of the day! We starting catching larger and harder fighting trout and it wasn't more than 5 minutes after they left Gary hooked into this monster! (No, I Mean This Monster Down Below!!)

What a nice battle! We had to go down at least a 1/4 mile to land this tank, I estimate at 8 to 9lbs. GARY, YOU'RE MY SIZZLER OF THE WEEK AWARD WINNER!! CONGRATULATIONS SIZZLER! JT

Bob then caught this dark brown that was shaped like a football?

One of the nights we headed out of the lodge for dinner at the famous La Olla seafood restaurant. We met two guys from England that talked our ears off and we ended up having a few drinks with them and a few hundred laughs. That's what I really like about traveling, all the interesting characters you meet on the way!

Gary continued his wrath on the Rio Maullin by catching 3 like this in a row!

The first time Gary went out on the Rio Maullin he caught this cromer Atlantic Salmon! I like the Rio Maullin, you can catch Rainbows, Browns and Atlantic Salmon.

The night that Bob was fishing in front of the lodge, Gary was up on the deck enjoying a cold Colones Ale made from a local German brewing company. The views were spectacular and Gary commented on what a truly special place on earth this was.

Here's to the pot of trout at the end of the rainbow!

Sundown on Lago Llanquihue is always a time I stop and reflect on the days gone by. Chile and its unsettled land, lakes, rivers and weather never controlled by dams, humans and modernization. A step back in time that knows no boundaries, one that could be guided by Rod Serling himself, in another spine tingling episode of The Twilight Zone. (There's a sign post up ahead!)**HOPE YOU ENJOYED THOSE ADVENTURES!! STAY TUNED AS WE SHOW SOME GREAT FLY FISHING OUT OF MY RAFT ON THE UPPER SAC, AND TWO GRAD STUDENTS FROM STANFORD MEDICAL SCHOOL, COME UP AND CATCH SOME BIG ONES ON THE KLAMATH RIVER!! MANY RIVERS TO YOU, JACK TROUT**
