BACK IN MT SHASTA! LOWER SAC, CADDIS PUPA RED HOT FISHING! RAFTING BEGINS ON THE UPPER SAC.**
Hola Sizzlers! This is a wonderful waterfall on the Rio Nilague near Lago Ranco in one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen in Chile. Bob, Francisco, Chimbo and I headed up to check out a new area and have an adventure in a place almost like heaven.
The Rio Calcurrupe with its glacial river colors and high Andean peaks that enhance the backdrop as you float and catch lots of 10 to 14" rainbow trout and the occasional 20"er. Bob caught so many trout none of which were too big, but it was the big one we lost that always seemed to be remembered most! What a fabulous day on a magnificent piece
of water in one of the most incredible areas I've ever seen in Chile.
This is where we stayed while visiting the 3 rivers in this area. Great accommodations boast views to last a lifetime. Smells of a tropical rain forest inspire guest to ponder the nearby volcanoes as glacier rivers finger out in all direction.
The flowers that frequent the area were so special and being that it was mid Summer when we were there, they were in full bloom!
One of the days we had an asado on a hill above Lago Ranco. It was awesome, Bob, Francisco and I ate like kings and drank
wine like jokers as we laughed and enjoyed the company of a true Chilean family, with a real working ranch. Bob and I rode their family horse and managed not to get hurt! We needed our arms for the next adventure that laid ahead
awaiting us. (Couple of city slickers, huh?)
Many of you have emailed me saying you never got to really see Christine's beautiful blue eyes! Well here you go Sizzlers, was I kidding? Just like marbles. She showed me a picture of her friends back in Germany and lo and behold they had these eyes also! I think it's an epidemic in Germany, One I wouldn't mind catching if you know what I mean. **Christine, thank you so much for all great times we had together in Chile. I hope you come out this Summer to California. I could use the company"!
In Puerto Varas there's an Italian restaurant called Alassandros. It is so great because of the nice folks who work there and of course the pizza and Italian meals are so divine! WAY TO GO ALASSANDROS! YOU'RE MY SIZZLERS OF THE WEEK
AWARD WINNERS. CONGRATULATIONS SIZZLERS! JACK TROUT
Before we headed north to the Rio Calcurrupe, Bob Quillin, Nico, Francisco and I did a two day camp out on the Lower Maullin. Being that the float was slow anyway and the trip was 13 miles long, it didn't make sense with the warm Summer weather to do anything else but camp out under the stars of Chile. Bob caught lots of fish both days and the spirits were high as he brought in another!
Lunch everyday was spectacular as usual, Francisco's wife Veronica can really put out a delicious spread always accompanied by a bottle of fine Chilean wine cause Francisco's dad owns a high select Chilean wine store in
Puerto Varas! Yea Papi!
Bob loved his experience out on the Lower Maullin and at night it seemed that anytime the stars would come crashing down on us being that they seem so much closer and bigger than home.
Did you know the Rio Maullin was floated in 1968 by Ernest Hemmingway? He coined it as being the best brown trout fishery he had ever laid eyes on!
The camp out was a barrel of laughs. It was a little cold at night but the stories that flew around the camp fire warmed our hearts, bellies and souls. I would do it again in a Mt Shasta minute. I had a few stories to add to the fire, you can bet on that! jt
Dog's best friend! **STAY TUNED SIZZLERS AS WE SAY GOOD BYE TO BOB QUILLIN AND TWO MORE CHARACTERS SHOW UP IN HOPES OF CATCHING SOMETHING BIG IN FLY FISHING'S FINAL FRONTIER.
