Howdy everyone! I hope your opener was as good as mine. I've been all over the region guiding, from the McCloud to the Klamath, from the Trinity to the Upper Sac. Last but not least, let's not forget the Lower Sac and the adventures that just keep continuing, in a year that dresses up perfect so far. This picture was opening day on the McCloud, Chip here, caught as many as 15 trout in the morning in just three runs! jt
The McCloud has been great as of late! Try a dry fly, like a Parachute Adams size 16, on the surface like Wes did. Cast it up against the Elephant Ears, and wait for the lips to appear. Fish are looking up mid-day right now, and the Stone Hatch is right around the corner Sizzlers.
I was sad the second day to find a smashed California King Snake on a McCloud River dirt road. It brought back memories of being in the Nature Conservancy, and seeing a King Snake and a Rattle Snake battle it out for territory and their lives. After seeing the dead snake Steve, and I headed for the river for a fishing session... When we returned to the vehicle hours later, there was another California King Snake who found the dead snake and was half done swallowing him,or her! Isn't nature fascinating...... Look close at this picture, two tails Sizzlers, far out, it's like the Donner Party all over again, happy trails snake dude!
Finally! Out in my raft, smelling the Upper Sacramento Canyon wild flowers, and catching trout in the hot Spring sun. Chris Abbott here from the San Jose Fly Casters enjoyed her day out in my raft even though the flows were a little high at 2150 CFS. Out of all my adventures from here to Chile, none suits me better than this one! jt
After stopping to wade and fish, Mark on his first cast caught this small but feisty trout named George.
I'm always impressed how different Upper Sac Rainbows are colored compared to other trout in other rivers. The Upper Sac Rainbow takes on a golden gin color from their lateral up, as compared to dark green from the McCloud River Rainbow.
Thank you all who sent in names for my new raft, I had 72 people send me names, and I must admit some were halarious, some were clever. But none were better than Tim's suggested
name, DOGONIT! DOGONIT! DOGONIT! THAT'S IT, DOGONIT HOW CLEVER!!! TIM, YOU'RE MY SIZZLER OF THE WEEK AWARD WINNER, CONGRATULATIONS SIZZLER!!
ENJOY YOUR JACK TROUT HAT SIZZLER!
Meanwhile over on the Trinity, Steelhead are everywhere! You could see them, 1/2 lbers, adults. I had a great time fishing with Lori, she was a real trout babe-a-lon! Mike Hibbard and John Drew were guiding also, when we saw Mike Hibbard's people land an 8 lb adult steelhead.....
Right after that, Lori landed this 5 to 6lb Adult Trinity River Steelhead!!! The flows are being raised next week to 6000 CFS which will make the Trinity unfishable but for now all is chill! ( New generation term, for COOL, Trippy or Classic) What ever's clever Trevor! Lori wins my vote for
Miss America Trout Babe 2004, let me know what you think....
What a great day John and I had on the Lower Sac this past week! John caught so many healthy Lower Sac Trout including this one, that he would need to make two trips, if he ever had to haul ass! jt
Wade here with a healthy Upper Sacer! What a marvelous day I had out with new customer friend Wade, also from the San Jose Fly Casters! It was an honor to speak in front of that
great fly fishing club. I have had as many as 10 different club members call and book me for my Upper Sac trip! Thanks
San Jose and thank you Wade, you're a great dude! jt
