* CHILE ADVENTURES CONTINUE FISHING IS AWESOME!!*
Volcano Orsono stands proud at 10,000 +. I took a drive down to the town of Puerto Varas near Puerto Montt, to check out the fishing and have a chat with my guide Francisco regarding the upcoming week. As I drove around lago llanquihue (pronounced yankee way) I watched in amazement as the volcano covered in snow and ice looked down on me as to point the direction towards a wonderful river it produces with it¥s snow melts.
The Rio Petrohue is similar to the McCloud River in many ways, not only does it get it¥s glacier color from the silts from the nearby volcano, it also holds McCloud River Rainbows. On this day
I was not working, but on a mission to see how it was fishing and try out some new bugs I thought might be affective.....
Like many other rivers, the trout were holding in pocket water. Places like these are idea for nymphing or dry fly fishing in the evening. I wanted to try out the Fox Pupa, Timmy Fox from Redding came up with this marvelous pattern that has produced quality rainbows on the Lower Sac, why wouldn¥t it work on this river that produces hatches of caddis that frequently are eaten by resident rainbows and browns....
I decided not to use an indicator and placed one Fox Pupa size 16
on the end of my tippet with a small BB weight. After two casts I felt a firm tug on the line and out jump a beautiful 4 lb trout!
It ran hard and fought me up and down the river as I let it run it¥s course of time before reeling it in and releasing it for another day. The only problem I had was trying to take the picture, it didn¥t fit in the lense and with no one around, I did the best I could....
Fishing edges on the Petrohue produces awesome catches and this run made no difference as I caught 22 that day and retired for a nice dinner on Lago Llanquihue. The Fox Pupa was awesome, thanks Tim! I might add, I also caught a few on a big Sofa Pillow dry fly
size 4, but that was more towards dark.
I had dinner at the Club Aleman, (German Club) I enjoyed the recomendation of my water Charlie, who said I would enjoy the fresh Congrio a lo pobre. ( Congrio with carmelized onions and two eggs on top!) I loved it and with a great 1/2 bottle of Cousino Macul red wine, how could I go wrong. The views were terrific and the atmosphere was one that I will remember forever.
I knew I had a great week in store for my next customer Chris Allick, who was coming down to celebrate his big 50th birthday!!
This is one of the hotels I use in Puerto Varas! But since Chris was going to be in a similar hotel in Pucon to start his adventure, I opted to put him in some cool cabins along Lago Llanquihue, thus to experience the true Chilean country side. I¥ll have those pics soon Sizzlers, we still got to pick Chris up at the airport...
The next day I headed to another section of river about 3 miles or more from where I was the previous day, with similar results.
In fact, it was even better, with more trout than the day before. But I sacraficed size and not beauty as it was as pretty as any river I¥ve ever seen in the world. For The Petrohue is always in my soul and it follows me where ever I go.
I caught so many trout this size that I sat to take a break, then a local kid showed up with bamboo rod and preceeded to finish the task I started...
I laughed as in the same spot the kid caught a bunch also!! I was impressed to see his little 7 foot bamboo rod bent over double time!
I really feel bad cause I never really could pronounce his name
correctly, but that¥s OK cause guess what Senoir, your my SIZZLER OF THE WEEK!!
CONGRATULATIONS SIZZLER!!! Did you know SIZZLER in Spanish is still SIZZLER, WOW!!! ??? øøøø
My friend Beatrice soon got into the act and on her third cast hooked into another!! I knew as I was driving back to Puerto Varas that night that Chris Allick, cool dude extrodinaire had a great week in front of him!! It was to be his fly fishing silver anniversary and the rivers of the Chilean forests would never let him down...* OK SIZZLERS MORE ADVENTURES COMING UP AS WE HEAD TO THE MAULLIN, PETROHUE, PUELO AND OTHERS YOU¥LL JUST HAVE TO SEE
TO BELIEVE!! MUCHOS RIOS PARA TI, JACK TRUCHA
