Here's a shot of the Upper Sac down by Dog Creek, looks very fishable!! All the weather is starting to fizzle now and the rivers are getting lower daily. The edges are fishing great and now is the time of year to catch a wopper up from Lake Shasta! There's bigger fish down in the lower stretches of the Upper Sac this time of year, the trick is accessing them, we aim to catch them by raft!!!
"We're gonna boldly go where no man's gone before!!" (or at least this year so far!) jt
My guide's Mike Hibbard and Steven Bertrand and I headed out to scout the Upper Sac for a my up coming season guiding the Upper Sac
by raft. The flows were high up top and it just seemed colder, the leaves were'nt completely matured on the trees yet and of course in Spring the bugs we imatitate for fly fishing need those leaves to live and reproduce in. As we headed more down the river towards La Moine we started to get into trout. Spring had started at that elevation and with it came the insect infrastructure needed to seize the attention of active feeding trout.
Nice Upper Sac Trout! These trout are different looking than our McCloud Rainbows mainly because of the natural camouflaging that goes on in the two rivers. The Upper Sac is more gin clear river with the kind of colors that are associated with granite rocks and sandy sediment structure, a classic freestone river. The McCloud is an example of a glacified spring creek that has a limestone and serpentine rock base. This river is kinda of a Spring creek that turns into a free stone river, The gacial silts from Mt Shasta make the tourquoise color you see in the Mccloud River and the trout are either darker or silver in looks.
It's a rafting ride too!! We go through class 3 water and I assure you that you will see some really big rapids this time of year. Right now you can see along a nice wall we would slowly drift by and hook up on a nice trout, it's running too fast. We've resorted to docking the boat at various locations and wading the riffles and edges of bigger currents, the fish are there! we had only 9 fish total all day but 5 of them were over 14"'s!!
Here's Mike with a nice 12"er fish fought hard! This is on the opposite side of the tracks and road access. That's what makes this time of year great and if it's slow we move on in the raft. I caution anyone to do this trip on there own. I have been rafting the Upper Sac for 8 years and the first 4 years of it I never fished, I just rafted with my rafting guide friends from Mt Shasta. There are many very dangerous rocks and hidden snags, if you are not familar about what side to ferry the raft to on the river, at what ever level it's flowing at. I am a certified Class 3 and 4 Guide and know every rock and nuance the river has to offer.
The day before, Me, Matt Hill and Chuck headed out for adevnture, the fishing was even slower. I think now everyday as Spring progresses regardless of cloudly weather and below normal temps people should fish, this is to our benefit hot weather melts snow very fast and can blow out the rivers, so get out now the good fishing has started. (No fish story!)
My Scenic Tour Guide Robin Kohn toured this nice couple over to Skull Cave at Lava Beds National Park. This cave was occupied by Modoc Indians that lived here less than 150 years ago.
Wow! This is a nice hacienda entrance to anyone's home. Great picture Robin!! it really gives you a nice perspective of what it's like in the cave.
This is called the Medicine Flag, This is a memorial for Captin Jack Stronghold the Modoc Chief killed in battle. This was a very bloody war that was fought in 1872-73 between the U.S. Soldiers
and the Modoc Indians.
So there you go another week in Shastaland, Mike caught 3 trout in this one hole! I anticipate a great season with plenty of water and happy trout. **HOPE YOU LIKED THOSE ADVENTURES, STAY TUNED AS WE
REPORT ON THE McCLOUD, KLAMATH AND OTHER SCENIC TOUR LOCATIONS COUNTY WIDE!** JACK TROUT
