Wednesday, May 7th, 2003 **SPRING FLY FISHING**
about 10 days ago I guided Gene Webber and his daughter Paige. Paige enjoyed her first trout hook-up on the Lower Sacaramento, the fish made the reel scream as it took line and made many runs. Paige handled the trout like a champ and laughed in utter delight as she
reeled in her catch only to release it unharmed!
Paige enjoyed this trip and another trip she took with her Father Fly Fishing on the Trinity this Past January. Paige is my, "Sizzler of the Week award winner" she got this powerful trout in a tough current and had a great time doing it!! Congradulations Paige good
luck in school.
Father of the Year! Gene Webber Ladies and Gentlemen. The day we had on the Lower Sac was fantastic then the water was soon raised
over 22,000 CFS. On this day it was at 5500 CFS and life was great!
Ever since Shasta the trout dog was a puppy she would point at rising trout. I guess it's just destiny? Not bad for a dog found abandoned up at the Mt Shasta high school in 1996. Shasta Trout is 8 years old, I guess that's 56 in dog age? I don't care how old she is I'm not checking I.D.s, she's a great partner out on the rivers and a huge asset on trails leading myself and customers on over 1500
guide trips!
Last week the rains made rivers swell, things looked gloomy for the group coming up from Teichert Inc. but the weather calmmed down a little and we decided to take a stab on the Klamath River. The flows were 2600 CFS and maybe with all these recent storms some Spring Run Steelies might of made there way into the Klamath system. Mike Hibbard my guide, who is also an expert on the Trinity joined me on this adventure. I like Mike he has a great attitude for guiding and said, "Jack do you remember when we guided Greg Livingood last December in those 45 mile an hour winds and still pulled off a spectacular day!!" So the stage was set, it was like a Rocky movie with Burgess Meredith in our faces saying, "Can you catch the chicken Rocky?!"
The water was high but that didn't stop Mike and I on this trip!
Guide Mike Hibbard with Brian's Steelhead Trout, What Beauty!
We just fished the areas on the river that we knew from previous outtings held fish. Traditional locations hold true on the Klamath River and when it comes to fly fishing it, there's none better than
Jack Trout Fly Fishing!
Way to go Brian!!! These two characters were hooking into Steelies left and right at the end of the day Mike's group hooked over 30!!
email me to find out what flies we were using!!!! jt
We were doing good in my boat too! The fish were in and like many other times on the Klamath we were'nt dissapointed!
Skip caught Steelies everyone caught Steelies and the day was held memorable by all. We were using 5 to 6 wt. rods floating lines and nymphing with indicators. Be sure to use a lot of weights when fishing high water. In fact I think most of the time weight and depth is more important then the bug we choose.
We caught fish from 10 inches to 4lbs, that's what I love about the Klamath, you never know what lurks in the depths of this magnificent river! Look at Shasta Dog she's always making sure we don't miss anything.
*HOPE YOU LIKED THAT STORY, MORE STORIES FROM THE McCLOUD, KLAMATH AND LAVA BEDS NATIONAL PARK COMING UP!!! UNTIL THEN MANY RIVERS TO YOU MY FRIEND** JACK TROUT
