Wednesday, April 3rd, 2002 **SPRING TOURS ARE HERE!**
The temps were soaring into the 80's down towards Redding so I called my buddy Stephen Bertrand and we headed out to check out the Lower Sacramento river, I had a guide trip later that week and hesitated on the Klamath river. It's been a bit off color and the fishings been slow due to cold water temps. Here's a great shot of the Sacramento river with the Trinity Alps in the back ground on a day that the heat exceeded 90 degrees! JT
We caught trout on small nymphs, the water level was low, about 4000
CFS, (cubic feet per second) It normally runs around 7000. Fish tend to hold in different locations when water levels change and we were determined to figure things out for that day. Fly fishing is funny that way, each day is different. if it's hot and sunny, fish tend to lie more in the riffles and deeper water. Towards the evening though, look for fish to surface on what ever is hatching.
Common to the north state, these Osprey, posing as a couple of love birds, perched up on their nest watching us fish their super market.
Osprey always build their nest on top of trees, or in this case a telephone pole. Osprey will also build their nest where they can see
two sections of a river, so quite commonly they have their homes on the bend of the river.
We caught trout fishing out of the drift boat but wading the river, was effective due to low water levels. It was easy to wade riffles like these and spook up a catch! It wasn't red hot, but the day never the less was very rewarding. Indeed..... Stephen Bertrand here has been fishing the north state rivers for years and knows where the big ones hold.
We're still doing tours over to Burney Falls and Lassen Park! I expect this to be our best year ever for scenic tours, we're booking alot of tours for the 2002 season, and look forward to sharing our knowledge and love we have for the greater Mt Shasta area with you.
Our tours are well planned and organized by the areas top tour operation Mt Shasta Scenic Tours. Have a great Mt Shasta experience,
Jack Trout
