Tuesday, February 19th, 2002 **MORE PATAGONIA CHILE** A golden shot behind campo lindo: A confluence of two rivers can be a great place to catch a fish, why you ask, because the fish has the benefit of two covers and two food sources. On this day it proved true to form as we returned with the McMillen brothers to our favorite hopper river. Mont lives in Orinda while Bruce lives on the east coast, fly fishing is a sport that has brought the two together for a family reunion Patagonian style, hook ups, fun and laughter! When was the last time you grabbed a love one and took them fishing, nows the time. Bruces hookup!: Bruce had many hook ups on this day and so did his brother Mont. I wanted to thank Mont again for bringing me the great coffee from Buenos Aires, I almost ran out down here, still enjoying it! The fish in this river feed exclusively on hoppers, and actually have about 5 months to get 80% of their protein for the harsh Patagonian winter. Can you believe it gets as cold as 40 below down here in the winter. In 6 months the temp has changed from 40 below to 80 above thats a 120 degree difference!!! Wow, just the word Sizzler in the winter makes it warmer down here. Montes catch & hookup!: Hey everybody this is Mont! He¥s a beginner at fly fishing and this was his first hook up in Chile. A nice 17" Brown Trout on a size 8 Hopper, I think he¥s hooked if you know what I mean. The two brothers had a great time fishing the rivers and palling around together around Coyhaique. I think these trips will become traditional with the two, where will you fly fish next together? Calafate Berry: This bush is called the Calafate, it produces the Calafate Berry. They say if you eat this berry you will always return to the Patagonia. It¥s like a blue berry and it taste¥s great, I eat them all the time, kinda like job security if you know what I mean!! haha The bush has thorns though that can tear your waders, Simms gortex waders seem to work best out here in Patagonia, their bullet proof. Hopper river mountain: Armed with a fly rod, box of grass hoppers and a water, what else do you need except a fish to keep you interested in a wonderful sport. And if it gets slow for fishing cause the trout stop feeding or the hatch goes away, so what... I¥m here in Patagonia, look around I¥m living life large and all is great. No world problems come to mind, just the sound of my cast and the kerplunck of my huge hopper hitting the water, life is good, yea, life is good my friend. JT
