Thursday, September 27th, 2001 USA WILL ALWAYS PREVAIL!
How peaceful can it be on a rock watching the river tumble through
the steep river canyon of the McCloud. I've seen lots of animals out
and about gathering their food before the winter weather begins to set in. A small bear crossed the road in front us the other day as we headed for the McCloud River.
Hey Gene, your a little far out! The McCloud fishes the best in the Fall and many look forward to the many hatches that occur in the Fall. Gene here enjoyed the week he spent on the McCloud River
and knows to nymph it correctly you must high stick using the fly rod to slow the fly down under water.
Look at the Elephant Ears in the background, this native plant is all but over now that the colder weather is setting in. The leaves will turn this brillant yellow orange color then die and return in the spring next year. Bob enjoyed catching as many as 5 trout under those Elephant Ears. They like to seek cover under the leaves, catching unsuspecting bugs as they make their way down the river.
Meanwhile, Gene here with this awesome McCloud River Rainbow. What a great adventure we had Gene, look forward to the next one!
Those bright red berries you see are called the Bitter Cherry Plant.
It grows along river and hillsides that have springs. This bush is a member of the genus that has cultivated cherries, plums, apricots, peaches, nectarines and their relatives. The fragrance of the blossoms offset the bitter fruits. The plant blossoms April through June. The berries appear now through October. The fruit is often made into jelly, Just use alot of sugar!
