Tuesday, September 11th, 2001 GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES
Every year I get the opportunity to guide and instruct the University of Stanford. These students were easy to teach and very receptive to learning fly fishing quickly. I might add that this was one of the most polite groups I've ever taught! We started out at the Mt Shasta Trout ranch for a little casting instruction.
We then headed over to the ponds to try a little casting for trout and Joe Kimsey from the Ted Fay Fly Shop gave a fly tying demo. Joe is a true legend of our region and has been fly fishing our area for
over 60 years!
After a few hours at the Trout Ranch, we ate lunch and headed for the McCloud River to try to put the teaching to use on the stream.
How would Stanford prevail? would they perform and make their University proud, or fail and be upstaged by Cal Berkley who we guided earlier this year? I might add Cal wasn't as diligent as
Stanford in the "Trout Ranch Class Room." Cal were a rowdy bunch,
this group looked determined and ready. Maria got this nice trout
and the race was on!!
I took a group up to Middle Falls on the McCloud River. Eric here was really having alot of problems at first, but I got time to teach him a few things and before we knew it Eric had his first trout on a fly rod!!! Way to go Eric your my "SIZZLER OF THE WEEK!!"
Shasta sitting on this log really loves hanging out at Middle Falls.
She's so classic staring at the falls in doggy awe, what a cool pup!
I often think to myself what she must be thinking, one look at the falls and there's no human word to describe the true scenic beauty
that even a dog would cherish. Of course this isn't just any dog.
Last but not least by any means is Tom, and this gorgeous Brook Trout. All The students wanted to let you know Tom that they are very grateful for putting together this event. Tom had a great time bringing in this beauty, I wanted personally thank Tom and look forward to next years group of Sizzlers!!!! take care Stanford
and remember, "Think like a fish, Look like a Bug!" Jack Trout
