*****ALL RIVERS ARE IN GOOD SHAPE NOW! UPPER SAC RAFT, LOWER SAC ARE RED HOT!! KLAMATH STONE FLY HATCH STARTS NEXT!! McCLOUD RIVER IS A WEEK AWAY…
Another look at Burney Falls! As we head into June, it really feels like April to me. Just coming out of the high water window, and having weather that is still unpredictable is not normal for June. I said it before, I’ll say it again, this July and August will be the best ever!
I have been having great trips and catching trout, but waking up at 4:30am to bring you this story, and hearing the hard rain pound on June 2nd, 2006 is bumming me out. The Upper Sac is at a perfect flow right now at 2700 C.F.S. It’s just rafting in the rain is better if your a trout, not a Jack Trout….. I guess I’ll just shut-up and suck-it-up, I’m lucky to have so many guide trips and people who want to go out fly fishing and forget about home-life for a while. Besides, the way this year has gone, wait a little and the weather will change again, you watch!
Every year Todd Stenz shows up with his group of friends from the east coast. This year he brought out his Uncle Mike. Mike had fun hooking into trout on Hat Creek.
Todd showed the group how to hook-up and quickly run to shore so the trout doesn’t get off in Hat Creek’s fast currents!
Nice trout Sizzler!
Over in the Hat Creek area, Danny from the DFG plants hatchery trout for tourists to catch in all the local creeks, rivers and lakes. Some folks don’t care for planter trout, but I think it’s important to have wild trout areas and hatchery areas. It makes it obvious where to take trout and where to put them back. I’ve seen it in Chile, if you don’t have planted trout, locals will take wild trout and the fisheries can suffer. I do believe it’s smart to keep planted trout and wild trout separated cause they have different living habits. But to shun your nose up in the air is a non-necessary practice. Hatchery trout saves wild and native trout because they are usually planted in national parks, camp grounds and other areas where people are camping and want to eat a trout in the great outdoors. Hatchery trout are great for that. They are made to be planted, taken out and eaten. They only have a 1% survival rate in a year’s period. I release them also, but if you want to eat a trout, take the planted ones. Think of it as a Government subsidy! I guess we could call them welfare trout….?
Mike, hooked-up again below the weir at Hat Creek. Todd, Matt, Jeff and Mike, thanks for coming out again. See you next year!! JT
Lynn bought a gift certificate for her husband and caught most of the trout!
Who was that certificate for? You or Ron…..? Way to go Lynn!
Friendly local osprey are seen up in trees and catching trout as we float.
On my day off I headed to Portola to pick up my brother and head to Reno, Nevada to the biggest little city in the world!
The New Cars! Todd Rungren has replaced Ric Ocasek as lead singer, and Prairie Prince from that great band the Tubes is now on drums. I really thought they were great. They played all those tunes we heard on the radio back in the 80’s like, Bye Love, Moving in Stereo, (Remember Judge Reinhold in Fast Times at Ridgemont High? Oh Phoebe Cates! What a babe!!!) Anyway, the New Cars played, All Mixed Up, Candy-O, Just What I Needed and more! Todd Rungren is not Ric Ocasek in voice, but I think that the music was so dead on it didn’t matter in concert. When I saw them 23 years ago in Reno they didn’t move much…this time they rocked like it was the last concert they would ever do, and for that I am delighted to have seen them in concert. Right-on Cars Sizzlers!
Phoebe Cates! What a back in the 80’s babe!
I truly believe the Cars were always led by the cool guitar sounds of Elliot Easton, and keyboardist Greg Hawkes. Elliot and Greg are to the Cars, as Mark Knopfler is to Dire Straits…..Everything! Elliot Easton (Left) Kasim Sultan (Replaced Benjamin Orr on bass after he died of cancer in 2000. remember Benjamin Orr sung that song Drive (who’s gonna take you home tonight?).
Next to me were three beauties rock’n out!
That’s really feeling the music of the moment!
The New Cars are definitely worth checking out! They even did old Todd Rungren songs and the crowd was instantly sent back in a time-warp to the 1970’s. It was the like the 70’s and 80’s radio in one night! Thanks Cars Sizzlers, you rocked even better this time!!!
On my way home back from Reno to Mt Shasta, it snowed on me near Susanville, California.
Wow! That’s the biggest bush of wild roses I’ve ever seen in Siskiyou County. All this rain
is making the spring wild flowers very happy!
Ben enjoyed the day he went rafting and fly fishing with his mom and dad!
Nice trout, Ben!
Chris, that is a very fine trout for your first time ever fly fishing! CONGRATULATIONS CHRIS, YOU’RE MY SIZZLER OF THE WEEK AWARD WINNER!
Shelly did good on her ride down the Upper Sac. It had been a long time since she had fly fished with her father. But for Shelly it was like riding a bike as she hooked into trout immediately!
Nice trout Sizzler!
What could be better than wading and catching trout on the Upper Sac in spring. I have hundreds of customers that think the way I do! Thanks to all of you, I couldn’t do it without you! Jack Trout

My son Carter has now been in England for 6 years. Can you believe it? We are getting old!
I would like to put something together with you when he returns in August. He hopes to get a job in San Franciso or some place on the Coast. He wants out of England. He ‘s a broker at Lloyds of London after graduating from Oxford Brooks University in Oxford England. He always mentions you and your great sense of humor in his letters. He loved that trip with you as did I. He would love to return to the Klamath and the Shasta area with you.
What’ your schedule in late August?? How about some private fishing grounds for trout?? Teh steelhead on th Klamath.
I am off to Zambia next month to fly fish for Tigerfish on the Zambezi. Hope I live through it! I’ll take pictures for you.
Best,
Doug Helm
Well Jack,
Just a small request. Could you get that Phoebe Cates to come fishing at the same time as us next year in Chile. I’m sure that my casting would improve to no end.
David and Maureen.
I am really enjoying your pics and adventures. Great!

Jack,
Hello, I got your name from my chiropractor Larry Massula. Told me to hook up with you for a great time rafting and fly fishing. My son will be with me all summer and I am looking for some fun things to do with him. He is 15, loves to fish, do you have any available dates open?
look forward to hearing from you
Angie Smith
Jack, Thanks for showing mine and Todd’s picture on your web log. look forward to next year. Mike
Jack–We had a great time fishing with you. The best part of the float is that when fishing is slow, the rapid running makes up for it. I feel like my batteries are recharged. Thanks for sharing. See you soon!

Hi Jack!
Every year I try to plan a fun fly fishing trip for my hubby for his birthday which is in August. He has expressed a desire to fish in the Mt. Shasta area. I am looking at doing this sometime in August. Maybe a drift boat trip? It would be 2 of us. I just got into fly fishing. Got tired of sitting on the shore! Have some suggestion and prices for fishing that time of year?
Thanks a bunch,
Camille Rasner
Jack, great pictures on your website. My friend, Bob Jones and I are
looking to do one day rafting the Upper Sac and our schedules look like
the third week in July works for us. What does your schedule look like
for that period?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
