Guided a scenic tour this past week to Shasta Caverns, Mt Shasta, Lassen and one of my all time favorites Burney Falls! When we arrived Ranger Andrew Early gave us a talk about the history of Burney Falls then later I walked down with part of the group to give a fly fishing demo. Little did I know the Mayfly hatch was on and the trout lurking amongst the depths were now feeding fanatically on the surface!!! jt

I reached in my fly box for a gray Adams size 14 and preceded to cast. On my first drift I saw the trout come up and sip my fly as though he, or she, was slurping a milk shake made with Hagen Daz ice cream! It was fun to say the least and to look up at water falls 129 feet in height, from which half it's water comes from underground lava tubes from Mt Lassen, delivering it's pure pristine spring water at a temperature year around of 42 degrees. This is one unique water fall in that it's flows remain constant from season to season. This season they found dead from natural causes, a 39" Brown Trout weighing 28lbs in Burney Creek! Ranger Andrew Early says a park tourist found it, and if it would of been caught it would of been the state record. I figure it must of come up from Lake Brittian to see the falls one more time at the end of it's life. They have a picture of it at Burney Falls State Park. Teddy Roosevelt once called Burney Falls, "the 8th wonder of the world." I agree...jt

After Burney Park we took the bus to view Mt Lassen the last Cascade Volcano to blow it's top in Califonia. Lassen peak is 10,457 in height and was last active between 1916 and 1920. My guide partner Nicole Larson and the group from Storer Tours modeling in front of Mt Lassen September 26th, 2003. Thank you for visiting our area, see you next Spring!

Back on the Klamath life is great! The Steelhead are coming in and I'm doing some trips now down towards Seiad Valley and Happy Camp. Eric Carter enjoyed his day on the Klamath River and plans to return with his buddy Chuck Williams November 22nd. (consider this your confirmation, just kidding!!) No Eric, your my SIZZLER OF THE WEEK AWARD WINNER!

Here's another Steely caught by Matt, but Matt's friend Chris didn't care too much about Matt being in the picture! I guess that's some kinda form of revenge for catching this nice Steely out from under his partner.....

Out this past week on the McCloud River with George Leboutillier and his son was a blast. The beauty of the McCloud River Canyon is another one of my favorites!

The first day we toured the group down the historic Sacramento Canyon where the tales included likes of such characters that inhabited our region. Pioneers like Jedidiah Smith, John Muir, Charles E. Bolton (Black Bart), Cincinattis Miller Hiner (Joaquin Miller) and the Wintun Indians were included in our tour. we arrived at the Shasta Caverns at 10am and took a ferry across Shasta lake.
At the entrance to the caves were all kinds of fossils, one that particularly caught my eye was this one that was fossilized worms! This is what every fly fishermen wants to do with worm fishermen, fossilize their worms and force them to use flies. (It's just a joke...jt) It is amazing that the ocean was this high at one time and left all these fossils
embedded in limestone.
This is the old entrance into the cave, this latter is from the 1880's. Back then the owners would bring family and friends into the cave and give each one a box of matches and a good luck thumb's up in hopes they made it out! The constant 52 degrees makes it comfortable on the usual 98 degree day outside. But in spite of the heat of the Redding region many were lost in the caves only to be finally rescued butt naked using their clothes sometimes as a lighted torches to help aid in being more lost.

Here's what they call cave spagetti, I suggest you visit Shasta Caverns sometime it's an interesting place to witness.

What can I say another great week in paradise! Thank you Storer tours and all others that we have toured or guided this year! Looks like the Steelhead season is just starting. ** HOPE YOU ENJOYED THAT STORY, THANKS FOR ALL THE EMAILS* JACK TROUT
