Once part of the glacier a tiny piece of ice melts enough to cause the weight of itself to drop through the cracks of other bluish colored glaciers. The dropplet then becomes a small stream that picks up more momentum as it runs it's course through the many mazes that exist within the interior of the mountain. This process can take thousands of years just to see the stream you see in the picture. The stream you see, has led a journey through the basement of time, one which could end instantly if the temps inside the tubes gets below freezing. This is the top of the "food chain" for California water, all streams, rivers and lakes first start here, at the source. The water temp is usually a constant 37 degrees. Jt City Park Springs: The springs gives life to many aquatic creatures, that in return are food for fish, birds and many other organisms that inhabit these waters. The creek continues it's journey until it reaches California's largest tributary to the ocean, the Sacramento River. This is the top, or where it all starts. It really shows how important Mt Shasta really is! DFG MT SHASTA HATCHERY: As the stream reaches the town of Mt Shasta, the Mt Shasta Hatchery California's oldest hatchery, built in 1888, uses the water to raise trout. Then in Spring and Summer, distributes the trout in local lakes, rivers and streams to be caught by locals and tourist alike. MT SHASTA HATCHERY BIG BOYS!: Look at these beauties! Ready to be placed in some lake or stream to be caught by you or me! These are the "Big Boys" Browns, Rainbows and Brooks are rasied at this hatchery. You can go by and visit them and feed the fish, it's a great place to take the family when visiting Mt Shasta. MT SHASTA HATCHERY The crew: These are the un-sung heros that provide us with hours of enjoyment! Thank you so much for all you do for Mt Shasta's tourism, I know first hand what great fishing can mean economically for a small community. The stocking programs, especially for our high mountains lakes is critical for keeping and bringing happy tourist and locals. Check out the new park tables and benches at the Mt Shasta trout hatchery, theres also a cool museum to visit! JT kLAMATH STEELHEAD BIRDS EYE VIEW: Last but not least, out on the Klamath this past week with my dog, Shasta Trout. Fishing was slow, the water was high and cloudy, but we still managed to hook a few 1/2 lb Steelhead. There's something about drifting on a river, feeling the breeze hit your face, smelling the wonderful fresh air as you completly loose your train of thought regarding things back in the real world. Shasta sure loves those drift trips, she howls on and on when we get ready to leave for the Klamath. I love life, I love the Mt Shasta area and all it has to offer! Jack Trout** WELL FOLKS THATS THE SCOOP FOR THIS WEEK, STAY TUNED AS I HEAD OUT ON ANOTHER SHASTA ADVENTURE!**
