UPPER SACRAMENTO FALL FLY FISHING ADVENTURES

      BigEventWebBanner

We donated a 6 day 5 nights 3 days fly fishing & one day tour to see the penguins Isle De Chiloe Patagonia Chile package!  See you at the BIG EVENT !!   Jack & Carola Trout

Call us for fly fishing steelhead trips on the Trinity &

      Klamath Rivers this fall!

      048 [800x600]

Howdy friends! Just got this great new web log program that I think will be terrific. As I learn more about all the new things I can do including underwater video Sizzlers I’ll be sharing them with you!!

Maybe I just might get lucky and Google River will come calling on me!!! So hold on to your hats because this web log is going to places that no one else has gone before, I hope you’re there with me.

We were the first fishing web log in 2000 and now we hope to maintain an even higher level of updated information and more posts as I will be cutting my pics in half and posting twice as often. (Thought you’d like that man!)

The future looks bright, better wear polarized shades.

Many Rivers to You,  Jack & Carola Trout

Side drift nymphing from my raft on the Upper Sacramento River

I love side drifting on the Upper Sacrmento River out my raft!!  Now the mornigs are getting colder, Peets Coffee or any ole kind of coffee taste better when it gets a little colder in the mornings.

The trout think so also and feed a little more now because of the colder mornings. I am seeing more trout on the surface lately on the McCloud, Hat Creek and Upper Sacramento Rivers.

      Upper Sacramento pocket water

Now doesn’t that look fun! The temps in the mid-day now are very warm, but not before long even those days will be over and will be into the best trout and steelhead producing weather.

Anotherwards pray for rain folks, we need it!!

Underwater insects that trout feed on

With my new underwater camera we can start to examining insects as though it would appear to the trout in all your favorite North State and South American Rivers.

(Guess I don’t need to cut down those mini gold rubber legs after all..?)

      Golden Stone underwater

The shuck of a Golden Stone, the aftermath of metamorphosis which occured the previous night now free floating down the current in a state of aqua-animation.

High action adventure with Chris Clark & gang!

Chris Clark on his favorite river hauling in another fine Upper Sacramento River gem. Countless trout he has caught out of my raft this past year.

At last! Cast splash dash so fast.......

      Water – Precious – Pure – Natural – From Mount Shasta -
I am not sad to see Nestle of Switzerland leave McCloud and go on to Sacramento, it just wasn’t in the cards from the beginning.

I know times are tough in McCloud, but selling precious water rights off to a foreign company that has no idea or conscience for local interests or tourism was a bad idea.

No one should ever tap the lava tubes or the aquifers of the McCloud drainages, it rivers and all tributaries that now run free. There are too many dams in the State of California
as it is, if we dam the rivers and continue to suck the water dry from the top of the food chain for water in California, (Mount Shasta) we will for sure change the purity of a once natural pristine and perfect environment.

In the beginning Nestle Water of Switzerland wanted to have 400 to 600 trucks per day on little highway 89. That would not be good for tourist,  trust me on that one or what about the air because of all the big rigs exhaust. I have to tell you something really personal, I love our blue skies up here.

I hope this serves as a message to any other Buckateers who try to tap our water or rivers around these neck of the woods best better be ready for the corporate fight of their lives! (We’ll  pierce their corporate veil, what ever the hell that means !!)

I am so proud of the countless individuals who stood up for what they believed in. We have to protect this place because it is the only place of its kind in California and the world. I love the Shasta area so much and just want to see this place stay a little innocent.
You can’t say I haven’t paid my dues, I feel bad for McCloud, but likewise it wasn’t easy for me to start a successful guiding business, I still have lean times people. But I made a plan and have stuck to it. What we need are more entrepreneurs to come up with a solution to the woes of a classic tale about an American “apple pie” little town called McCloud.

For now, some things are worth fighting for because you know it was right from the beginning (even though they tried to sneak it through the first time)  and all I have to say is: Good Bye and good luck to Nestle of Switzerland.

Now folks reading this out there, the next time your up in the Mount Shasta area stop on into McCloud and spend some time…Maybe a few bucks!

Now the next project is the Removal of the Klamath Dams – ALL 4

      BEEFY!!

Look at the shoulders on this warrior!

      Look at those shoulders!!

I like the side rims on that hot rod!

Nice silvery trout that fight hard, how cool is that!

Life is good - So is this cigar!

Cigars and fly fishing just go together! I sure enjoy the smell of a nice mild cigar out on the river. I don’t smoke them but I think they are good luck!

      McCloud River Magic

Fall arrives and so do the hatches on the McCloud River.

McCloud River one of California's river gems

The McCloud River is so awesome, always worth protecting. Future generations that read this, carry the torch my friends – Carry the torch!

Cool, it’s Black Midge Larvae – Want to take a look under water and see how their colors change and  how a trout might see them in a whole other way….

      040 [800x600]

Underwater Folks they appear to be more multi colored. I see most of them with black heads, yet others are red, gold or yellow and green.

So when tying these at the vise try to vary the colors and remember my photo makes them look big because of my great ++ Macro program on my nefty camera,

      Hello,
I would like to reserve float trips for November 22 and 23rd. The 23rd
is my birthday and I really wanted to spend my 40th fly-fishing in
Chile, looks like it might actually happen! Different rivers those two
days would be nice if that is a possibility.
We are flying into Puerto Montt on the 20th. We are renting a car and
was wondering if you might have some lodging suggestions.  I noticed
your 2-bedroom cabin which looks great, but it may be a little big for
us, its just my wife and I. We were looking for somewhere in the
$75-$80 a night range, but might do a bit more for the right place.
Thanks so much for all your help,
      Eric

       Hello Jack,

Senator Tom Harman here.  I wanted to give you a brief update on the efforts to remove the Irongate Dam as well as others on the Klamath..  The Oregon legislature recently passed a bill authorizing $200 million to be put up towards the removal of the dam(s). California is supposed to pay its share, which is $250 million.  I am using my best efforts here in Sacramento to get that amount inserted into a statewide bond issue, the proceeds of which will be used for multiple water projects throughout California.  We are reaching the critical point on that decision with the legislature scheduled to make a final decision on this very complicated issue not later than September 11th, which is next Friday.  I’ll keep you advised of the final developments.  Hope all is well.  Look foreword to fishing with you again sometime soon.  I’m thinking of a trip to Chile next year.

      Tight lines,

      Senator Tom Harman

In addition to your guided trips, do you give fly fishing/casting lessons?
I and my wife [she's never used a fly rod] will be staying at the McCloud Hotel this weekend, and if you do give fly fishingn/casting lessons I would be interested in your fees and availability on Sunday September 13.
      Thank you,
      Don Christy

Hey Jack Trout, I have been enjoying your web site for the last few years. I am orginally from Martinez,Ca. but after I joined the Army in 1978 I got married and my wife is from loiusiana, and have been living in loiusiana since 1982. When we used to go on vacation with my family up to Sweetbrier (which I love) The last time I went Dunsmuir, and Sweetbrier was about two years ago. I hope to go back next summer on vacation with my 16 year old daughter. I’m a preacher in Loiuiana but still love going on vacation to Ca. I also love to fish for rainbow trout. My name is Doug Watson, my Dad’s name was Jim Watson. God Bless, Keep up the good work!

      Hello Jack Trout
I am a Northern California fly fisherman from San Francisco. I”ve seen you at Indian Creek on the Trinity a time or two but have never had the pleasure of being guided by you. I’m planning a trip to the Patagonia in the spring. Will most likely be in San Martin and Coyhaique in March and April of 2010. Your website advertises guides in that are for $300.00 per day US w/two fishermen. Do you have multiple guides/boats and is it advisable to reserve in advance and if so how far in advance? I’m not rich, in fact I’m a school teacher who loves to fish. Are there any alternatives to the fancy lodges that are a little less expensive? Any information on economical accommodations and resources would be most appreciated.
      Thanks in advance!

      Jack,
FYI the TV stations we’ll be on are KHSL, KNVN, and MY21

I will get back to you about the TV commercials. We haven’t figured out
the logistics of TV advertising yet, but we’d like to get on the air
sometime next week. So I’ll keep you updated!

Are you available to come to The BIG Event on October 3rd? If so I can
      send you an invitation.

I’m interested in both Argentina and Chile.  If the fishing in your neck of the woods is decent, why don’t I come up with a friend and we’ll fish for half a day and discuss South America and kill two birds with one stone?  Was looking around the eighth of October + or -.  Drift
or bank doesn’t matter.  Will be driving up  so an afternoon session would work best.  Let me know.  Also give me a direct Email rather than going thru the website pls.

      Thanks  John Wright

      Dear Mount Shasta Area Anglers,

I’d like to invite you on behalf of the McCloud Local First Network to
attend strategic action planning sessions to benefit McCloud’s
tourism-related businesses. Anglers are a big part of McCloud’s
tourism economy, and it would be great if some of you could
participate with the other businesses (lodging, restaurants, services)
to help generate offerings/packages etc. to bring more visitor dollars
      to McCloud.

Please see the attached flyer invitation for the planning sessions,
      and the press release
      with more info is below.

      Best wishes and Thanks,
      Meadow

      McCloud Ca,
Ford Family Foundation Grant to Benefit McCloud Tourism—Strategic
Planning Sessions October 5th and 7th

The McCloud Local-First Network Tourism Working Group will bring all
McCloud tourism related businesses, organizations and interested
citizens together Monday October 5th from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and
Wednesday October 7th from 9 am to 4 pm, to develop a coordinated
strategic action plan to benefit McCloud Tourism. The strategic action
planning sessions will take place at Scout Hall in McCloud. The 2-year
actionable strategic plan with well thought out implementation will be
the most effective with many members of the businesses community
      participating.

“Tourists and locals agree that McCloud is an amazing place, yet many
of our tourism related businesses are struggling.  McCloud has so much
to offer and now, thanks to a generous grant from the Ford Family
Foundation, tourism related businesses in McCloud will receive free
professional help to develop offerings to visitors and build a strong
campaign to attract new tourism dollars to McCloud,” explained McCloud
Local First Network chair April Gray.

The process will begin with two in-depth working sessions where the
assembled participants will build understanding of the issues,
priorities, and opportunities in McCloud’s tourism industry.
Additionally, the facilitators will lead an exploration of industry
trends and successful practices in rural tourism and how alliances
among tourism-related businesses have helped communities similar to
      McCloud.

“We have found that doing the upfront work to strategically plan for
the future helps communities lay the groundwork for great things to
happen in their community,” said Robert Ault and Beth Gilden of Rural
Development Initiatives, the consultants who will facilitate the
      strategic planning sessions.

Rural Development Initiatives is an Oregon based non-profit that helps
rural communities thrive by offering a variety of award winning
services for community, non-profit and governmental groups to develop
sound plans, strengthen leadership skills, organize for effective
implementation, and leverage resources creatively. RDI facilitates the
Ford Family Foundation Leadership Development trainings in Siskiyou
County. To learn more about RDI visit: http://rdiinc.org/.

Additionally, the consultants will train two local people involved
with the McCloud Local First Network so they will be able to aid other
network working groups in a similar strategic action planning process.

All tourism-related businesses, organizations and interested citizens
are welcome and invited to participate in the strategic action
planning sessions and development of the strategic action plan. The
more McCloud businesses that participate the better the plan will be.
For more information or to reserve your seat, please contact McCloud
Local First Network Office at 530-964-3423 or email
info@mccloudlocalfirst.org. The sessions are limited to 30
participants on a first come first serve basis.
