Patagonia Chile 2011 looks to be another fantastic season as we head into our 17th year down there.

United States of America ~ Hearts, thoughts and prayers are with the stranded miner’s in Chile.

 The bees work harder than most out in the hot sun of California. We have a scorcher this week folks but they say it will be cool by the weekend, just in time for the next series of guide adventures where you the audience can be the star! Can you believe next year will be 10 years of blogs. I started this fly fishing web log in April of 2001 and would like to thank all the viewers and folks who have been there over the years! I look forward to at least 20 more years of web logs and stories. It’s been a lot of fun and even when I’m so tired and I need a nap on my couch, I think about all you fishing Sizzlers out there just jonesen for some more of that “Trout Porn” and I start creating another adventure. Carola and I do it for you folks, we’re dedicated and love what we do for you and the Mount Shasta area as well as Chile.

 In 1944 Bob Williamson graduated from McCloud High School. He lived with his father at LaMoine years later and always wanted to float the Upper Sacramento River. He fished the McCloud River before Shasta Dam and remembers the steelhead runs on the McCloud.

 So many breathless landscapes await us all this year in Patagonia Chile.

 The means by which we travel and more often than not, we never see another person.

 Glaciers that actually make noise melting while your drifting down the river.

 We hope to paint a new landscape for you this year in Patagonia & The Lakes District of Chile.

Chile 2011 Season Starts November 15th 2010.

I’m in Chile in my wife’s arms on November 3rd (Dreamy!!) I’m leaving early this year due to USA Immigration. I can’t be away from my wife any longer. It’s hurts only when I breath.

 I miss my wife so bad, being apart is so hard as we got a letter from Congressmen Wally Herger that Carola and I won’t be granted an interview by the United States Immigration before the end of this year.  So Carola will not be allowed to come and be with me this year, so I am leaving early folks.

When I talked to my attorney, he just wanted to talk about fishing in Chile and said it would be literally months until Carola would be allowed to live with me in Mount Shasta, that it’s just the time process. I have decided this time I go to Chile, I won’t leave my wife again alone. I don’t care about anything other than just living and being with my wife and since Immigration is playing hardball wait until we shread you of your finances B.S. I’ll rent the house out in Mount Shasta if I have to long term. It just doesn’t make sense on United States Government side when we insource money into United States banks by charging the credit cards of foreigners on thier trips with Carola and me in Chile. We’re the good guys, we’re small business ~ We don’t want hand outs ~ We want to be part of the solution and we will add commerce to any community we live in. We just want to be together.

We think there should be a seperate department for Amercians who own business’ and marry abroad, there is a difference. I expect help from my Government leaders to get my wife over in the United States pronto.

I am ashamed that it would take my country so long after we married in February 2010 to allow my Chilean wife entry into USA. I understand many before us have ruined the process and now the laws have been changed so a foreign spouse must wait in their country for months for this process to be finalized, but it’s not fair.

I’ve done a lot for my country, I have generated tremedous business & commerce for my community, state and country. Now it’s time for someone out there to step up to the plate and realize you can’t keep a good man and his wife down!

I dedicate this song Beginnings by Chicago to my wife who is stuck in Chile waiting for her loyal, faithful, hardworking husband. I think this song shows our taste in music and just how American we are, we deserve to be together.

I’ll be there on November 3rd with 2 dozen roses and 2 boxes of Sees Chocolates!

Hat Creek, so we agreed the Upper Sacramento fly

fishing float trip was the way to go!

running all over the place. It was a real hoot!

Many places I would just use my claw clamp and

hook-up to willows so Rick could fish the riffles.

 Often met with success we use small flies and always

catch and release. If you need a meal, eat in

Dunsmuir, McCloud or Mount Shasta. You’ll be

helping our local economy and I promise everytime

you come up, you’ll catch bigger and bigger trout!

line up and salute the gracious Ande Mountains.

Your best bet is do a few float trips with me, stay at our B&B. I can float you on 2 private rivers get out in sections of these rivers and wade privately in my area then I’ll take you down to Puerto Montt and have you stay in our cabin on the banks of the Rio Maullin (dry fly out front wading) We can fish Maullin & Petrohue by drift boat.(Also wading in some sections of the rivers, but you need a boat to get to them) Then we can help you get a rent a car that allows you to go into Argentina from Chile and you can easily wade rivers in Argentina 4 hours from our B&B over the hill from us.(Andes Mountains, an amazing drive through Pucon, Chile and Volcano Lanin National Park)

By the way, when I made the itinerary, all I did was remove the last day of your original itinerary to get from six to five days of fishing in Chile.  I think the Rio Trancura trip got dropped.  But if it makes more sense to go there rather than Rio Maullin on the last day, or to stay in a different location the last night, it’s perfectly fine with me.  I’ll be new to Chile and all of these rivers, so I’ll take whatever route or order you suggest over the five days.  I’m looking very forward to getting away from work and just being on the water.

 After guiding 22 out of 25 days, I was pretty happy to have 3 days off over my b-day on July 31st. I’m sorry I can’t get everyone’s picture up right now, but over the next 2 weeks if you watch you’ll see how we did. I am so happy to announce that the Upper Sac has really come back completely from the 1991 chemical spill by the Union Pacific Railroad. The river is fine now and the average size trout is fantastic! I have open dates after the second week of August if you’d like to float Upper Sacramento River with me. Thanks to the over 4000 people on my email list and past clients who have been keeping me really busy in this sluggish economy! Taking good care of people in the past has its rewards!

 Even in the slower water trout are on size 18 and 20 mayflies & midges.

 This nice hatchery trout from Shasta Lake came up to escape the summer heat and lack of oxygen.

 John Wilhelm came back to fish with me and had a great time! John Wilhelm in 2003 went to Chile with me and we had a great time with he, Taki & Rob Brown. (Rob Brown caught a 9 lb brown trout in Chile, is there something in the name?)

 Shasta Trout was my fly fishing guide dog who many of you remember from the 1521 trips she went with me on.

We did 7 TV shows together and she would howl if I even mentioned the word “Fishing!”

 She passed away in 2005 after getting sick and dying from the blue green algae on the Klamath River, like so many other animals have. She was the greatest guide dog in that she would point towards rising trout, twitch her ears and not move a cubic inch on guide trips with me and clients who used her as a back rest on the raft. She is always truly loved and missed as it has been 5 years this week since I lost her and I have never had the heart to replaced her. You can’t replace a dog as special as Shasta Trout Fly Fishing Guide Dog. She will always be in my heart and when I think about the McCloud River, I think about Shasta Trout.

Thanks for your quick response.  That all sounds good.  I’d like to start setting up an itinerary for Chile.  I like the idea you suggested of fishing with you for several days, then heading out on my own to Argentina.  I’d be looking to arrive into Santiago around the 7^th of January, then departing on the 16^th or 17^th.  And I can be a little flexible with both the start and return dates.  I’m an American based in Panama, so I’d be flying from Panama City.

To be honest, I’ve only been fly fishing for two years, and mostly on small rivers and streams in the Catskills and Vermont.  But I just started a one-year project in Panama and I can’t pass up the opportunity to fish down your way.  Since most of my gear is for small stream fishing and I’ll also be trying to travel light, I’ll probably rent gear from you as well.

 Isn’t it amazing how nature knows after a long winter, how to wait for the flows of the river to come down before the trees and flowers bloom  for the spring season providing habitat and a catalyst for insect hatches that feed the entire eco-system. Can you imagine if nature didn’t wait until this past 3 weeks to do its thing, then trout and the rest of the wild kingdom would have to try to do all the spring feeding in the normal April /May months when this year these trees, plants and flowers had no leaves thus no places for insects to hangout on and renew the next generation of trout, birds and critters that all rely on eachother every spring. This year everything is a month behind on the Upper Sacramento River and it’s a good thing since the river finally got normal around the middle of June. Nature is  incredible, it can adapt itself after a long hard winter and now when it would usually be the “dog days of summer” it is prime fishing time folks! The hatches are terrific and the trout are feeding hard for July. Come on up!

 Jim was a retired school teacher for years down in central California, but enjoys his time fishing and being out in my boat.

 When it’s time to eat we have a mighty fine meal on “Lunch Beach”

 On this day we invited guide Jason Sinclair to come along, we had a great lunch and a barrel of laughs.

 Then Jim continued his rampage of hooking and releasing trout!

 Not every rapid is so nice and easy, so maybe you would consider doing this trip? I would suggest getting certified as a class4 rafting guide first or you might just be one with the river! Remember, a river runs through it….. 15 years of rafting this river might count for something. One year I found a guide’s rod, reel, cooler, fly box and when I returned it to him, he didn’t know any of names of the rapids or runs. That’s just plain disrespectful this river can distroy you if you don’t take the time to learn the routes, I’ve been studying for years.

If you don’t know the names of the rapids, you shouldn’t be on the water. Just some good advice that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

CONGRATULATIONS SIZZLER OF THE WEEK!!

 Did you know that on the Upper Sacramento, Pit & McCloud Rivers that many Native Americans lived  in pits dug out on the banks of the rivers. This would help from the hot days with half the pad built down in the Earth for insulation for the suns heat. Must of been amazing when the salmon and steelhead ran on the all these rivers mentioned. I have found net weights along the river and obsidian spearheads for spearing fish that used to run before Shasta Dam was built.

 I was up taking this photo when I looked over and a 350 lb bear that was sleeping looked up and grooned at me as though I disturbed his beauty rest. I actually smelled him before I heard him move as he or she was enjoying an afternoon “cat-nap”. He looked up at me with one eye opened and I darted out of there so fast and my client Lamar saw him follow after me. When I ran down off the hill, there was no bear in sight. Luckily he lost interest in me and headed off  in a different direction. Reminded me of the time my loyal Guide Dog, Shasta Trout

treed a bear at Bollibokka, that was the greatest guide dog that ever lived. I sure miss her out on the boat with me.

 One day we saw this Golden Eagle that lives on the Upper Sac.

 I like to just tie my boat up with my Mr. Claw then have the clients just fish right from the boat.

 The rivers that Mt Shasta fills are all starting to come down now, just be careful for flows & water temps for children, it’s not normal for this time of year! Have a safe 4th of July and please don’t litter our area or start fires that could negatively impact our paradise. Like we say in South America, “Use your head Amigo, you only have one chance!” Read the fishing regulations for where you are fishing and you’ll probably need to stop off and get a fire permit for your marshmellows extravagenza at night.  Pure water downtown that flows from a lava tube that comes from the center of Mount Shasta. The water never sees the light of day until it flows into your mouth! So bring your huge water jugs to fill up for home use, it’s free. 

 Out on my raft fly fishing on the Upper Sacramento River has been epic to say the least.

 Perfect weather, Wild Azalea blooming which scents the air with a wonderful fragrance.

 Wet wading has been terrific since temps have been from 85 to 90’s Lot’s of sun folks!!! Enjoy this video..

 This is the time to access the Upper Sac for fishing because the leaves are on the trees and the bugs are hatching. Just go deep and use SSG weights to get down and slow down  for fish munching pleasure Sizzlers! In my raft I can get you to the otherside where the fish feel safe until August from likely waders.  Even in the highest water trout are still biting away. If the leaves are on the trees the insects are there and the fish are hungry from a long winter. Now the flows are getting better for wading, so all the better!

It seems that no one is really watching the Klamath River. Yea groups and organizations representing the river’s best interests say they have fixed the Klamath and all the interested in the river have passed an water allotment that would be beneficial to all parties. Ranchers in Oregon, salmon, steelhead, suckers, Native Americans & guides who make their living from what resources the river provides all.

Well you look at these photos I’m about to show you because I’m out there all the time and I can not believe how unhealthy and smelly this river is becoming. I haven’t seen it this bad since 2002 the year the river was killed by the Bureau of Reclamation and we lost thousands of salmon. Like 2002, the river is being mismanaged and ignored by many that say, “there is nothing wrong with the Klamath River, we fixed it” Well you might have come to some agreement but the Iron Gate side to the Klamath River is ill and becoming over taken by the algae blooms that after yesterday, I have decided to leave the river because it is not fishable due to algae blooms and lack of flows.

These algae blooms could be compared to the BP mess in the Gulf, in that like oil, algae blooms destroy oxygen levels in the river and when you mix in low flows and heat these plants are completely taking over the river in the top sections of the Klamath River creating toxic diseases harmful for salmon and steelhead as we head into the hottest time of the year.

Just doesn’t make any sense and now with the internet, I know for a fact these agencies hardly even look at the river’s health in person. Next I will show you how I know this….

 

 

 

 This algae is deadly to fisheries causing lack of oxygen levels and brewing toxic diseses similar to a fish tank that is never cleaned.

 

 

So I called the Bureau of Reclamation in Klamath Falls, Oregon and talked to Kevin Moore and told him about these algae blooms  that are growing at a record pace for this time of year and that I thought it could be a repeat of 2002 when we lost all those salmon in the river. He was very pleasant, extremely friendly and candid. Basically he said these releases are decided by two entities that are at odds with each other. He told me, “Jack, if I release more water we get sued by the Fish & Wildlife who are protecting the endangered suckers in Klamath Lake and other drainages associated with the watershed. If we don’t release enough water we get sued by the National Marine fisheries.” Then he went on to tell me that also any dam operator who talks about releasing more flows to the fish is immediately replaced in Klamath Falls at the Bureau of Reclamation. This really angered me, as I realized that since the Bureau of Reclamation is located up in Oregon at the source of the water that there would always be an unfair bias for the ranchers and suckers, since those people working at the Bureau of Reclamation are living there in KFC. (Klamath Falls City) So basically speaking, even though the Federal Government is suppose to fair and justified to all parties interested in the resources of the Klamath, they aren’t and are really extremely bias and underhanded in their approach, candid and honest.

 

Kevin Moore klmoore@usbr.gov also had no idea about the algae problems in the river, one reason is because they don’t have web cams at the Bureau because they certainly don’t check on the river any more or they are completely being oblivious to what is going on in the trenches of this disaster about to happen again.

Can you believe this SH>>! Get a clue this is not healthy. Folks say to me, “Jack, if they take out the dams the river will just be a trickle in the fall.” I say at least then the overnight temps are usually in the 40’s low 50’s where algae doesn’t grow and it is a natural progression for the river’s health as opposed to now we are heading into the hottest part of the year. We shouldn’t be decreasing flows and growing algae in the river. I would have to say that President Obama and his Secretary of the Interior need to get clued in on this. So far I have not seen any kind of good environmental recourses being taken on by this administration. I’d have to give you a D grade on the environment due to missing in action syndrome. I know this year if something doesn’t change we will probably have another salmon kill on the Klamath River, Kevin Moore and the Bureau of Reclamation can’t do anything for the river’s health being that they are located up in Klamath Falls. I think the best thing for the Klamath River is to move the Bureau of Reclamation to a neutral grounds so the river and salmon have a fighting chance. Jack Trout July 1st, 2010

I recently sat in a meeting where dam removal experts employed by the federal government geeked out for a full hour about the finer points of how to physically deconstruct the Klamath dams. It was rewarding, and awesome. It finally started to sink in that the feds and all their resources have fully gotten behind the idea, and Klamath dam removal gets closer to reality with each passing day.But to keep the federal government focused on and supportive of dam removal, we need to once again supply them with the evidence that the environmental impacts of Klamath dam removal will be positive ones. In the next two weeks the feds will be holding scoping hearings on the dam removal agreement throughout the Klamath Basin as part of an environmental review process required under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The NEPA/CEQA analysis will provide the basis for a U.S. Secretary of Interior finding in 2012 that dam removal is in the best interests of the American public. We know this isn’t the first time we’ve asked you to attend a meeting and speak up for dam removal on the Klamath, and frankly, it probably won’t be the last time either. But we’re counting on you to go the distance with us to UNDAM THE KLAMATH and BRING THE SALMON HOME. Please look at the list of hearings below, find the location nearest you and bring your family and friends to testify. Use the talking points we’ve supplied here, or simply tell your story about the negative environmental impacts caused by these dams and the benefits of taking them out. Thanks for all you do.  Happy father’s day everyone and to all the good father’s out there, we salute you!

It looks like summer is finally dropping by so make your summer plans to visit Mount Shasta, McCloud & Dunsmuir.

 Carola’s father Armando Paicil Ruiz was born in Osorno, Chile in 1942 as a kid he rowed people across the River Rahue before there was bridges. In high school, he was an athlete on almost every level growing up in Southern Chile he enjoyed javelin, soccer, swimming, in which all sports he broke records and went on to be recognized by his peers as a legend and a mentor. He first mastered all these sports in high school and then he went on to become a championship coach and finally a famous sports radio announcer beloved throughout the country of Chile for his commentaries. He told me once he loved fishing the Rio Rahue and Maullin with a big smile on his face.

 In 1966 he moved to Llanquihue and met Irene (Carola’s mom) He was 25 she was 18. They had five children and Armando was the manager of a huge sugar factory called Iansa. This was the company that most of the town relied on for employment. Carola remembers having a maid to help her mother, her father drove a car and there was plans for the kids to go to college. He was well known for his participation in Union Workers and fighting for their rights. But after the coop of 1973 when Pinochet’s regime shut everything down, Carola’s father was taken from his home and accussed of things that were fabricated and he was tortured on a regular basis. He did nothing wrong, and was later compensated monthly by the Chilean Government for these humanitarian injustises. No one ever drove a car or even got a driver’s license from that point on and the town of Llanquihue died and has never been the same. Unlike my father in the USA, Carola’s father Armando had a much tougher life. It’s sad when I think about what he and Carola’s mom Irene endured in the early 1970’s in Chile.

 (I think Carola’s mom is a total babe, I see where Carola gets it from! Wow!)   

 The first time I saw Carola in Chaiten I stopped in my shoes, it was love at first site. She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen and still melts my heart to this very day. It’s great when you find the one you know was meant for you!

 Carola’s dad Armando Paicil past away this last week exactly once month to the day after my dad past away. Almost too incredible to phathom but life has had a funny way lately of playing kind of tough with the two of us, I’m sure we’re due for some good luck up ahead. Armando was a very loving father to all his children and we hope he rests in peace and hangs out with my pops Raymond and our little girl Chailyn. We love our fathers and on this special Father’s Day coming up, we honor all fathers whether your here or there, we love ya and you’ll be in our thoughts. You are loved always and will be remembered for all your efforts beyond the call of duty, for your sacrafices and playing second fiddle. For growing old ahead of me and sharing all your life long lessons or for just being a dad, we love you.

 Out on the Klamath River the stone flies are starting to migrate to the shores and the trout and steelhead are on them!

 We hooked up right form the get go and the fishing remained active all day.

 A nice hatchery steelhead for Gordon Lasko. He sure had a great time out with his brother the wine maker John Lasko from Lodi, California. Ever hear of Gnarley Head Wine? It’s good stuff that won’t hit you hard in the billfold.

I highly suggest that everyone read the rules and regulations for any river you fish on. The California Department of Fish & Game is out on all rivers and I might add in ways I’ve never seen. Under cover boats, checking guides on and off the rivers, anglers asked for licenses, coolers inspected and vehicles. It is a really nice surprise since I hadn’t seen them at all for the first 15 years guiding here in the North State. Kind of like there’s been a fire lit under some bodies butt. It’s a new era of DFG Wardens, young guys that seem to have a deep concern for the fisheries. I have seen these two guys many times now in the last 4 years and I can honestly say they are making a difference! They really care about the Klamath River and how the rules and regulations are honored, I think that’s terrific. 

 That day many people including young adults received tickets for un-barbed hooks and licenses. Some felt bad but it’s the anglers responsibility to know the regulations on every river. I just stayed back for a while caught trout right next to them and kept quiet and let them do their jobs. Sometimes the public can be hard on the Wardens for doing their job, but when you consider how much poaching was going on the Upper Klamath, all I can say is bravo amigos!

For the next few stories, I will be going over regulations on every North State river and sharing information on how to de-barbed hooks etc.I really like seeing the DFG out on the rivers, there was a lot of guides out of Oregon coming down to guide on the Klamath River without guide licenses for years, so this has been a welcomed surprise. Besides if you pay the fees, you like to see the fisheries protected from weasels who take everything they catch. 

This is a problem that really needs to be resolved on the Klamath River. These algae blooms that grow on the edges of the river where the flows are stagnant because the Bureau of Reclamation and Warren Buffet CEO of Pacific Power & Light won’t release more water from Iron Gate Dam. Right now the flows are at 1050 cubic feet per second, this is too low for the summer season on the Upper Klamath. The flows should be set at 1600 CFS June 1st through October when the fall salmon arrive. There are some spring salmon in the river now that would spawn more often if the flows were higher. There are wild steelhead in the river right now that need more flows and the Bureau of Reclamation on a year where there is so much water seem to have their heads up their arshes. The river is no longer alluvial because the dam no longer allows the river to come crashing down on high water years changing gravel bars, river banks and making the river healthy again.

Instead the river is being literally strangled by the side bank vegetation and a hard like cement bottom that makes spawning for salmon and steelhead like making love on interstate 5 in the middle lane. This will eventually lead to less and less spawning of these ocean species like salmon and steelhead because the conditions from algae blooms and lack of flows are toxic when you add summer heat into the mix. Imagine this, salmon are one of the only species on Earth that go back to the exact place they were born. Amazedly, they know how to smell out the place they were created. The Klamath River is approximately 190 miles long from the mouth to Iron Gate Dam but the area where the salmon historically would do the most of their spawning is cut off. They make it through canyons or bowling alley’s as I call them, then they make it to the flats where spawning came naturally easy and they are cut off only having a few good miles to spawn on. How would you feel if you were going to have some great time with your lady and you got cut off and stuck in Redding or Oroville or HORNBROOK, California. (Sorry for shouting). Get my point!

These salmon and steelhead are becoming depressed because they have no way to get up into the springs their ancestors and hereditary genes are geared up to see and experience. I’d be bummed too if I got stuck in Oroville or Redding on my way up to see Hearst Castle and Big Springs. Dams basically suck after about 50 years and folks we’re losing the salmon because of genetic de-coding. If these fish can’t get back to where they are from, the family lines are slowly being lost and this is what I feel is happening now. Folks in layman terms, we’re ending up with a bunch of salmon and steelhead that act and think like Jethro Bodean from the Beverly Hillbillies!

So this is what I propose, we need to get these salmon over these dams and create an ingress and egress for them to pass

in and out of all these dams. This can be done, they are doing it now on the Bonnerville Dam on the Colombia River.

This can work people if we make this a priority, the salmon populations aren’t getting any better and we need solutions soon. The only other alternative is too take all the dams out on the Klamath River or face losing our salmon populations. The Lower Sac we can run them thorugh like the Bonnerville Dam on the Colombia River.    Jack Trout

My Father Raymond has been my best friend all my life! I guess you’ve noticed I haven’t had a post in a long time. My dad passed away on May 7th at my brother Pete’s house in Portola, California. He always told me not to be too sad when he died, He said, “go down to the local fountain shoppe in Portola and get a strawberry milk shake to remember me by.” You all would really like my dad.Born in San Francisco in 1920, a Veteran, educator for 31 years at Portola Elementary, fishing guide in Graeagle California for almost 20 years and a Fish & Game officer for a few years until they told him he had to carry a gun and he quit. He went to USC in the 1940’s after WWII when Hollywood was really Hollywood and actually had acting part in White Christmas where he drove a Jeep on the set, but his tobacco pipe smoke went up into Ben Crosby’s nose standing above him singing and he lost the part.(He thought that was funny) He also had several other small roles common in those days for university students and Hollywood. He gave up the big city girl after college for the mountains and rivers, for this I am so grateful for. He lived simple, he was old school and is among the last moral generations left standing on the face of the Earth. His message was this, “Life is about how you effect other’s as much as you can, in a positive way.” I live his message he taught me daily and always remember the terrific times and note worthy lessons he helped me to realize while I was growing up. I love you Dad! You made every one of my high school football and track practices and games. You always supported me and loved me and I am eternally grateful to you. You are as good as it gets when it came to fathers & mentors!!!

Now you see where I get it from! Times were a little different back in the 1930’s out fly fishing in California. At least I think the trout here were caught on flies, the cat fish….? This is up in Red Clover Valley above Lake Davis, California. Before dam stories, Letser T Davis or the Westland’s Water District. He had such a passion for the outdoors, I can remember him waking me up at 5 am and being so excited. One time he shut the car door on his thumb and it was locked, my best friend and I had to get the keys out of his pocket while he stoop there in agony with the door closed on his thumb. When it was finally opened, his thumb was mangled. But we still went out on our journey!

Carola get ready honey, we’re having children soon!! Someone needs to guide the masses someday in the future!! My father would want this and I never thought I would say this but. I WANT CHILDREN!! THIS IS WHAT LIFE IS ABOUT. (She wants kids so much, she loves them!)

Just when I thought things were getting sad, I feel empowered, like my dad is in me now and all those insecurities just disappeared. Isn’t life amazing, wonderful, mysterious, rewarding, losing. It’s like a Shakespearean play where you get to be every role in life. The hero the villain, the rich, the poor, happy, sad. All you have in life are the experiences so you have to make the best of life people!

Now all I can do is get Carola my wife here from Chile and start my family.

I love my father Raymond and will always think from now on about how he would approach life, because I know in my heart that would be the right right way to go about anything life presents me. I hope I can make it to 90 years old!

Artie and Dino are back from Granzella’s of Williams, California. They wanted to float the Upper Sac and didn’t care the flows were so high. Fishing was almost impossible since the flows were at 3000 CFS. The water was off color but it was warm so who cared.  http://www.granzellas.com

Dino hooked one at this spot and the fight was on! Happy camper indeed!

On a day like today, we went with Golden Stones and May Fly nymph immitations below an indicator with a ton of weight. Early in the season like this Mayflies are your default fly below and on top of the surface.

Dino really getting into this now because the trout is so spunky after a long winter of fighting currents and un-settled weather. He’s freaking out and the fly rod is feeling the brunt of his actions as the reel screams out line in distress.

Under water the trout is closer to the surface now. (Ho’d he do dat?)

Fly Fishing Hat Creek California can be a great place for a beginning fly fisherman.

I like to fly fish some of the faster currents on Hat Creek as well as the dry fly water.

For a beginner on his first fly fishing guide trip this can be an amazing experience. After several years it becomes like a zen in life that takes you to a special quiet place where the flow of the river caresses your legs and the natural rythyms and sounds of nature soothes the soul and makes you feel like you did when you were younger. It brings one back to his or her roots and Mother Earth is where all started folks! If you are stressed out, up to your ears in traffic and ready to claim gorilla status in a cement jungle! Chances are you my friend need NATURE 101.

Wow under water insects in their natural habitat, now this stuff gets me excited! If I could make a living just filming under water shots of fish and insects, I would jump Sizzlers! Stone Fly just getting ready to hatch in June and fly around and feed the entire eco-system of the Burney – Hat Creek area. I love fly fishing with stone fly immitations on the surface!!

So does Carola!! She loves dry flies on the surface.

You think we had wind last week! Imagine you’re an insect dealing with currents and trout lips! When was the last time you thought about that?

Talk about, “I’m having a bad antenna day? “

The trout are literally every where on this river, you just need to be patient and wait for them to feed. Right now 10 am to 1 pm then sun set on sunny days are the most productive times on Hat Creek.

If you don’t see insects hatching and birds flying around, chances are you need to go down sub surface nymphing. Otherwise when the hatch is on, match the hatch and go poking around with dry flies and you’ll get a big surprise my friends.

Hat Creek is a beautiful river easy to wade and perfect for fly fishing. I love guiding this river like many others in the North State of California.

If you want to lesson on dry fly fishing on Hat Creek, I know the river well and love to instruct beginners here.

I guarantee under that tree is a trout waiting for an insect to fall off its leaves.

Now here’s a good feeling story. Carola and I had fun just before I left Chile buying vacination shots for homeless dogs in our home town of Los Lagos Chile. It cost us about $6.00 per dog to vacinate them from parvo etc. They sure liked us at this pharmacy!

This old timer really appreciated our help! Plus we give them a free meal. It’s not a big town, we got to know all the homelss dogs and will continue to vacinate them. Next we’d like to start a neutering educational program in Chile, just to see if we could pull it off. Sounds like a lot of fun to me and anytime I can help an animal, I’m all ears with a waging tail! If you’re going to be out on the streets might as well be healthy not sick.

So the next time your in a foreign country, if you see homeless dogs, check to see if there’s a animal pharmacy in the neighborhood. It’s something else to do on vacation and you might educate a community.

Though we’ve never met, I feel I somewhat know you after following your postings for a few years now.

First, my heart goes out to you as you grieve your dad’s passing. That’s a tough one, but the only way out is really through. However, once you get through, you may find that your dad will be your companion the rest of your life. At least, that’s been my experience with my dad. All the wonderful memories just make my heart swell with joy. Meanwhile, though, the agony is a bit rough. Hang in there!

Now, about Carola. If my memory serves me right, you two were married in Chile. Was your marriage registered here? I’m not sure what the immigration laws are now, but back in ‘75 my husband (who was not then a U.S. citizen or resident) got a green card to accompany me (very much a U.S. citizen) here. So why can’t she get a green card by virtue of being your wife? Then she would be free to come immediately. I’d be happy to bounce some ideas around if you’d like.

Have you talked to an immigration attorney regarding your options?

PG&E A LITTLE MORE WATER PLEASE!  I thought this was ridiculous when I saw how low the McCloud River was for the opener for trout season. PG&E has it so low and spawning season wasn’t even considered or the fisherman.. Get with it PG&E you folks are disconnected entirely…

 Snow pack on the Castle Lake Road impressive… Looks like we’ll have  a good water year finally, with lots of snow-pack up high.

Back In Chile before I left, we had are most productive days in April when Smiley came back.

to fish just one more day!

The steelhead, trout and salmon are making their way up the rivers form the ocean so we had a marvelous day catching over 20 + trout, 3 steelhead and one salmon all on our nymphs.

My lovely wife Carol who I miss dearly holding a beautiful steelhead. Even after our marriage we have to wait for U.S. Immigration to Ok Carola into the USA… It’s a real bummer because I need her here now to be by my side. We talk every day and I am trying to get all the papers filed as fast as I can. I dream of the day when Carola can be in Mount Shasta anytime and we can be together like husband and wife. I hope it’s not too much longer…

Here’s a nice salmon we hooked right at the end of the season as the runs started. I really like fly fishing Chile in March and April, it can be fantastic.

Now that I have made it back home and have caught up with my work I have the time to send you an E-mail. What a trip, it was more than I expected. I was expecting to fish, which I did for 10 days out of the two weeks I was there.

I wanted something other than the fishing trip where you are picked up at the airport and taken to a lodge and the only time you leave the lodge is when you are fishing. This may be good for a trip to Alaska where you are miles from civilization but not for a trip to Chile. I wanted to see and learn about local culture, to experience the food, to go to the small towns not just the big cities and most of all meet the people. You more than helped me to experience the kind of trip I wanted. Your knowledge of Chile amazed me, not just the culture, your knowledge of the volcanos, the mountains and the rivers was amazing. But I guess having a local as a wife has helped. Speaking of your wife, Carola is a doll. She made staying at your house almost too enjoyable. The meals she prepared for our lunch were great. I have never had a guide set up a table on an island in the middle a river and serve a hot meal with the local wine like you did. I was also not prepared for my bed to be made and my clothes washed like they were. And she was an asset when we would eat in a restaurant since I still wonder what we ordered in Argentina when the waiter started laughing so hard. And I want to thank her personally for helping me pick out the gifts for my wife and daughter they both loved their necklaces and ear rings and I’m sure they are still wondering how I would think of such good gifts. We just will not tell them how reasonably priced they were.

It was your 15 years of guiding in Chile that made the fishing part of the trip fun and easy. I never thought I would be fishing 8 rivers and 2 lakes over the two weeks I was down there. Most fishing trips I have been on you might fish two or three rivers and if the fishing is good on one river the guide would take you back to that river day after day. Nice, but the way you did it I was able to experience so many different types of rivers from the mighty Rio San Pedro (reminded me of the lower Sacramento River in California) which your house over looks to my favorite the Rio Maullin down by Puerto Montt which is more like a jungle. Not only the different rivers the different types of fishing I was able to experience because each river and lake we fished required a variation of fly fishing. I liked how we started with pulling streamers, got into nimps and finished with using dry fly in Argentina. The different types of fish were also a surprise to me. Watching those massive Pacific salmon swimming up the Rio San Pedro was a thrill but catching an Atlantic salmon a few days later was a bigger thrill. Hooking an 18 inch German Brown with a streamer was fun but hooking a 24 inch on a dry fly in Argentina was a thrill of a life time.

I can not wait to fish with you on the upper Sacramento River it has been one of my dream locations but only fishing the lower part has been the extent of my fishing on that river. I have been told by other fishermen the upper Sac is the place for big fish but it takes a good guide since it is not a drift but a rafting adventure. I have been told it can be a little scary with the rapids. After fishing with you I have put the upper Sacramento River back on my list of places to fish. I would feel very safe with you so I plan on getting back with you after your back in California to set up a trip.

Jack – We want to book a stay with you.  We would definitely want to fish for at least 3 days.  The question is whether we can fit in some additional fishing days.  Currently, we’re looking at arriving in Valdivia on 3/16 and flying out of Santiago on 3/26.  What is the driving distance from your place to Santiago and to make it interesting, how many days should we give ourselves to get there?  We have friends in Santiago who we want to try and see before flying home but we want to see some of the countryside on the way up there.  In other words, we want to play tourists for some period of time.  So if we need to get to Santiago early on the 25^rd and it’s a leisurely 5 day drive to Santiago with stops, that would leave us with 3 days to fish.  Just trying to figure out the specifics.  Any suggestions would help.

About 15 years ago, a fly-shop owner told me how much fun it had been to go
on a combined whitewater rafting/fly fishing trip in Chile. If I’m ever to
take such a trip, the December 2010 – February 2011 period is when I will do
it. Do you arange such trips?

I’m open to either river camping or staying in a lodge. As I already live in
western Oregon, I’d prefer a dry location to a wet location. Also, I read
about a terrible horse fly season there in certain places–I’d like to avoid
that. As of this moment I’m on my own, but I might be able to bring someone
else along with me.

If you do arrange such trips, I’ll have all the usual questions. Also, has
the recent 8.8 earthquake affected travel and tourists in Chile much?

Carola and I got married officially in Los Lagos, Chile.

 We actually plan to have 2 more weddings in California and Chile for our families and friends. This was very special day for both of us!

 Then we went to Valdivia afterwards for food and drink, where I had a very special surprise for Carola!

 A band to serenade us while we had great food and drink.

 The next day we left for Argentina for our Honeymoon and a trip to

 explore fly fishing over the hill from us.

 It was snowing on top of the Andes where we crossed the border.

 Beautiful Lakes where we drove towards San Martin de los Andes on the famous 7 Lakes Road.

 Driving into San Martin de los Andes we could see it was a very special town, somewhat like Mount Shasta, California.

 Cool – very cool place! We bought our fishing licenses here….

 We stopped by this wonderful Cava liquor store to pick up some Argentine vino…

This rivers is full of healthy trout and they prefer hoppers on the

surface! Just look for a grassy bank, one just perfect for a grass hopper

to jump off into the river and that’s where you should fish folks…

 I caught 12 trout in my first hour here!

 All on hoppers is ok by me!

 Meanwhile the ants keep marching on!

 This is what Chile needs to do!!  Have rivers that are catch and release

 fly fishing only and actually have them policed. Argentina is even a

model for the United States to follow, more rivers here are fly fishing

only than in any country in the world and because of it, the trout

prevail and so does fly fishing tourism.

Howdy everyone.  We are stepping out into the public again, and have set up a cause page.  We are trying to get to New Zealand to hold a ceremony for the return of Salmon to our rivers here in California.  I have additional information I can send you if you like.  We  are trying to get the Casino tribes to help out but I wonder if the fishing folks would care to help?  We believe that this ceremony may help resolve a broken covenant made between man and salmon that dates back to the 1870’s and was abrogated when Shasta Dam closed their route to the home waters.

Hello All, 

 I wanted to bring to your attention this issue of the salmon and what is about to happen to them, which in turn will happen to all people.  We are going to New Zealand to dance for the salmon and pray for their return, since it is the McCloud River salmon that live in the Rakaia River in New Zealand now.  They were taken there in 1875 from the McCloud River.  However, before we can even get enough money and all the clearences for our regalia, it looks like Senator Feinstein is cooking the books with Westlands and will sell out all the water leaving the salmon to die.  I hope you will see the urgency here and figure out what you can do.  Please do something!  It is more than just salmon that will die for they are the climate changers! Senator Feinstein wants to kill them without even a thought of the imperative job they do for water and all life, without them there won’t be a prayer for pure, clean water.

Siskiyou Water Network meeting informative, collaborative, encouraging

Over 30 people, from private landowners, land managers, conservation organizations, tribal representatives, watershed educators, concerned citizens and even a congressional hopeful crowded into the California Trout office in Mount Shasta for the Siskiyou Water Network meeting on February 9th to hear updates on work going on in the county regarding water.

The informal network with the goal of sharing information and fostering cooperation among diverse groups and interests found success as attendees stated that the meeting was informative, inspiring, and actionable.

On the agenda were informational updates that included project goals, status and primary contacts for the following projects:

Siskiyou County’s water strategy project

In December 2008 Siskiyou County hired Water Resources Consultant Dr. Sari Sommarstrom with the goal of developing a common vision and taking a proactive approach by developing a water strategy to address water resources in the county. According to an emailed update from Dr. Sommarstrom, Water Issue Identification meetings have been held for Butte Valley in Dorris in May 2009, for the Upper Sac/McCloud in Mount Shasta in June 2009, and for the Shasta Valley in Yreka in July 2009. Minutes from the meetings were sent out to participants for each meeting, some feedback was received, and draft Bibliographies for each sub-basin were circulated. In addition, County water-related policies were compiled in preliminary draft form and Sommarstrom is now meeting with county staff in each pertinent department to ensure that none were missed. Funding is needed for Phase II of the County Water Strategy, which will clarify potential products that the county may want to pursue (such as a Water Resources Guide), identify data gaps, and research strategies used in other rural counties. Siskiyou County Natural Resource Policy Specialist Ric Costales and Dr. Sommarstrom are primary contacts regarding this project.

Klamath Settlement Agreements

As one of the 29 parties to the Klamath Settlement Agreements, Donna Boyd of California Trout explained that this is a unique and historic moment, as the 10-year mediated agreement is nearing the official signing day in a couple of weeks. There will then be a 60-day period where all the parties can sign. There are two settlement agreements: the KBRA (Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement) and the KHSA (Klamath Hydroelectric Settlement Agreement). The KBRA is a comprehensive agreement to restore the fisheries, habitat and communities in the Klamath Basin, and the KHSA is an agreement that is a pathway for the removal of 4 dams, though not a set course.  Donna Boyd of California Trout is available as a contact regarding the Klamath Settlement Agreements.

Upper Sacramento Watershed Assessment

Sandra Spelliscy, Executive Director of the River Exchange provided a report on the Upper Sacramento Watershed Assessment. The project, which was meant to be a full scale assessment was one of 6000 projects statewide that was affected by the State Bond freeze. While they lost a year of progress and a quarter of their funding, the project has hung on and the stakeholder group, steering committee and hired consultant are completing an “existing conditions document” which must be submitted by April 2010. The River Exchange will host a public meeting in March to allow for public input and participation.

Upper Sacramento-McCloud Integrated Regional Water Management Plan process

Spelliscy also provided an update on the State’s Integrated Regional Water Management Planning (IRWMP) process. The IRWMP is a way for the State to formalize and channel funding to water management projects (such as repairing infrastructure, restoration etc.) in regions thorough the State. The River Exchange and California Trout submitted an application to the State through the “Regional Acceptance Process” on behalf of a forming “Regional Water Management Group” (RWMG) that includes a broad range of stakeholders including county and city governments, private landowners and nongovernmental organizations. The Upper Sacramento, McCloud and Lower Pit was accepted as a region this spring. As an approved region for the IRWMP program, the next step is waiting for the State to allocate money from Bond sales to the Department of Water Resources. The Upper Sac-McCloud region will then be eligible to apply for planning grants—hopefully this fall. The plan, to be developed by the diverse interests represented in the RWMG, will talk about all needs we have in the region for stewardship, water quality, water quantity, groundwater monitoring, water use and supply in region. With the plan in place, the region will be positioned to receive implementation money for projects prioritized in the plan and could include items such as fixing wastewater treatment plants, studying impacts of climate change on water supply, and so on.

Mount Shasta Springs Assessment

California Trout Mount Shasta Area Manager Curtis Knight provided an update on their ongoing Mount Shasta Springs Assessment project. Started two years ago to better understand spring and groundwater resources so we can better manage them, CalTrout has monitored 23 springs around the mountain. UC Davis is providing the lab analysis. The springs are monitored for flow, variation, temperature, and water quality characteristics. Isotope analysis is used to tell the source area and recharge area for a spring, which helps determine the age of the water. The study did five direct tests for age using an analysis of Tritium, (a radioactive isotope). Big springs on the McCloud river aged at 9-14 years old, Big Springs at the Mount Shasta City Park aged at 25 years, Carrick springs aged at older than 25 years, and two springs near each other at Big Springs in the Shasta Valley aged at 20 years and 44 years and with different chemical constituents. The study is revealing the complexity and variability of the springs surrounding the mountain. The hope is to better understand how the springs react seasonally, interannually and to postulate potential impacts from climate change. The draft report of the past two years is being prepared by Aquaterra (the consultant performing the inventory) and will be released on CalTrout’s website in the next few months.

Upper McCloud Springs Mapping and Land Use Investigation

Dr. Rene Henery, Research Director for the River Exchange relayed that the Upper McCloud springs mapping and land use investigation, a project funded by the Bella Vista Foundation is readying for release and will be available on the River Exchange website sometime in April. The project mapped springs in the Upper McCloud watershed using existing US Forest Service and US Geological Survey springs layers and aerial photography. The purpose is to develop a coordinated effort to address water quality at the source where springs come out of the ground. Springs are critical to the habitat for the McCloud Redband trout.  Categorizing springs based on land use and ownership and looking at aerial photos for 90 different springs will help to prioritize future restoration efforts.

Shasta River restoration

Curtis Knight of California Trout explained that while the Shasta river used to be one of the most productive salmon producing tributaries to the Klamath river, last Fall only nine Coho salmon returned to the Shasta River, and they were all male. This means two cohorts of this Federally and State listed species have been lost. There is one more cohort expected this fall, with an anticipated 100 fish to return. Coho are hit harder than Chinook and steelhead because their life cycle requires them to live one year in the river before they migrate to the ocean. Shasta river restoration efforts are focusing on practices to keep the water temperature suitable to rearing habitat for the juvenile fish. The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) regulates diversions for agriculture and are now implementing an experimental program called the Incidental Take Permit program (a 500 page document) which will hold landowners responsible for their water diversion permits. DFG is working to help ranchers to come together under one permit to cut cost to individual landowners so they can comply with the laws (one permit could cost between 10 and 100 thousand dollars).  Landowners are doing everything they can (screen diversions on water diversion pumps, keeping tail water cool, fencing and so on) to comply with the program.

Winnemem Wintu projects

Mount Shasta Representatives of the Winnemem Wintu tribe, Mark Miyoshi and Luisa Navejas provided updates on the Tribe’s projects. Their restoration project at Panther Meadows redirected the trail to run with hydrology of area and to accommodate more visitors. They still need to do more trail restoration from their sacred spring to the campground to help mitigate impacts from tourism and to restore the hydrology. This summer they plan to expand the forest order to encompass more land for more protection around their sacred spring. The Winnemem are participating as stakeholders in many projects including the Upper Sacramento Watershed Assessment and IRWMP. For the Watershed Assessment they are working on the pre-contact Winnnemem Wintu story and history that includes ethnographic interviews. Another major project for the Winnemem is the issue of raising Shasta Dam because the raise would cover their last remaining sacred sites, ancestral sites and burial grounds. The BLM (Bureau of Land Management) has sent an assessment to Congress, but budgetary problems keep the issue up in the air. The Winnemem are in conversations with CalTrans and monitoring the raising of Antlers bridge as this action would be a precursor to raising the dam.

The Tribe is going to New Zealand in March where the tribe will dance for the Chinook salmon there. Those salmon were descendant of eggs from the Baird McCloud River Hatchery at the confluence of the McCloud and Pit rivers. The Tribe will start discussions with New Zealand to bring those salmon back home. There is a Biological Opinion from the USFWS (US Fish and Wildlife Service) to start reintroducing salmon into the Upper reaches of McCloud.  This is the start of a long process and reintroduction would likely require a trap and haul system for bringing adult fish into the upper watersheds to spawn, and for collecting juveniles and bringing them around the dam when they migrate. This system is occurring in Washington State.

Fall River Conservancy projects

Andrew Braugh, Program Director for the Fall River Conservancy described the projects of the one-year-old organization. The Conservancy, which seeks to preserve lands, waters and culture in the Fall River Valley is choosing an integrated conservation approach which includes assessing and incorporating economic, political, and social drivers to achieve conservation objectives. The giant spring-fed Fall River is located one hour east of Mount Shasta and the water comes from the Medicine Lake Volcano. The gradient is less than one foot per mile and in the summer its water provides 85% of the water for Pit River dams. The region supports a wild trout fishery, and endangered species such as the Shasta crayfish and rough sculpin. Area landowners have come together to fund the project of the Conservancy and their strategies are: research and science, land stewardship, water quality and community outreach.

McCloud-Pit Dam Re licensing

Curtis Knight of California Trout gave an update on the FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) McCloud-Pit dam re licensing process. The five-year re licensing process began in 2007 and will go until 2011. FERC requires permits for hydroelectric dams and reviews and re licenses dams once every 50 years. PG&E produces 364MW of power from projects on the Pit (that includes water diverted from the McCloud and Fall rivers). The power produced is important to the Western grid and California’s power needs.  80% of the base flow of the Upper McCloud river is diverted to the Pit river drainage. Historically, the McCloud was a keystone watershed for salmon, steelhead and bull trout. So far PG&E has spent 12 million dollars on studies to determine what their project impacts have been, and there are numerous proposals from agencies and non profits, a new biological opinion to determine what flows would be needed to sustain bigger fish, and various mitigation measures proposed. The Draft EIR (Environmental Impact Report) is due to be released later this year. 

Mount Shasta Community Right’s Ordinance

Two of the coordinators of the Mount Shasta Community Water Rights and Self Government Ordinance, Angelina Cook and Ami Marcus, provided an update on the project. Cook explained that the Ordinance is a grassroots attempt to celebrate Mount Shasta’s water as an important source for California’s water and to fill in the gaps with existing water policy by providing regulations not only for surface water but for the atmosphere and groundwaters as well. The Ordinance is specific to Mount Shasta City limits and would prohibit weather modification (cloudseeding) and any additional water extraction for resale and export out of basin. Marcus explained that a key component in the Ordinance is recognizing that nature has rights. Enough signatures to put the ordinance to ballot have already been collected and the coordinators are continuing to collect signatures through March 8^th with the hope that that City Council will adopt the ordinance. Marcus noted that 85% of the homes visited in the signature gathering process are supportive. If passed, the Ordinance would give the City legal standing to enforce the terms of the Ordinance. If passed the Ordinance would follow in the footsteps of over 120 communities across the United States that have passed ordinances to return governance to the hands of the people.

Medicine Lake aquifer

Michelle Berditschevsky, Executive Director of the Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center (MSBEC) provided an update on the risk of contamination to the Medicine Lake aquifer from geothermal exploration. Though CalPine Corporation has been trying to develop their geothermal leases for 20 years they have yet to find a commercially viable source. The drilling, which goes 9,000 feet below the surface poses a risk to groundwater resources, especially important because Medicine Lake is the source of Fall River springs. The aquifer has not been mapped, and it is uncertain how much water is provided, but potentially 36 million-acre feet. As the well shafts cut across hydrogeologic boundaries and can break, thus allowing toxic metals and other contaminants to mix with groundwater resources, MSBEC is challenging CalPine in the 9^th Circuit court on March 10^th 2010.

Upper Sacramento Headwaters restoration

Dea Knox, the new Program Manager for the River Exchange is the primary contact for the Upper Sacramento Headwaters trail restoration project at big springs at the Mount Shasta City Park. They are currently working to finalize the designs for the improvements that will include a trail that meanders along the stream and to secure the necessary environmental permits before the project goes to bid.

Good to hear you guys are okay.  It sounded like the worst was farther north, but I wasn´t sure.  The first bus I could get is for tomorrow, but I need to get back to Yumbel to see how everyone is and if they need help.  All phone lines are down there and Internet also, and apparently at least one bridge is out, so I still don´t know how they are doing.  I would much rather be fishing, but… 

Had a good trip to Yelcho though.  Fished out of Puerto Piedra one day with good results and then went down to Puerto Cardenas for three more days and fished out of my tube at the place by the football field you told me about.  Awesome advice!  Never got a monster but got lots of really nice trout to about six or seven pounds.  Incredible place! 

I will call you as soon as I am able.  Be well and take care, and please give my best to Carola as well.

Jack—saw your note on your weblog that the two of you are ok—I was checking the map the day it happened–looked like you were far enough south from the quake center that it shouldn’t have done to much major damage to your area but I was concerned about the tidal wave—unbelievable the distruction from both—the fishing trip went over big at the fund raising auction—an owner and President of a major pipeline construction company bought the trip—really a nice man by the name of John Allen—he plans to bring his 13 year old son who loves to fish–he ask me if I thought it was a good trip for his son—I told him that he would have the time of his life, especially being from Houston.  Take Care !

Believe me I am anxious to get with you and spend some time on the river in the country but I must get Soph settled before I can leave Santiago. Her school program in Valparaiso postponed their start date of 03-03 because of the quake and they are reestablishing a new date. She may leave before the week is out to go live with the family in Vina Del Mar that she is assigned too but it is still not clear. We have been in touch with them and they are all okay and excited about having her stay with them for the next four months. I should no more tomorrow at this time and will keep you updated. I`m okay with taking a Cruz del Sur bus I am not comfortable leaving her in Santiago until she is connected with her family and/or program…I`m sure you understand…

I’ve not had a chance to speak with my sister who is out of the country about this, as she and her grandchild might join us. But independently I need to fold it into my total cost for the entire trip and let you know. I think what you’ve offered is certainly fair and would be a great adventure for us. One aspect I’m trying to reconcile with two kids that have grown up with video games is their ability to stay tuned into this over the course of a day!
