 Back ready for action and ready to guide all the great people who come up to the Shasta area this 2013 season, so far the fishing has been fantastic! Was a little of an adventure getting back with our plane down in Santiago they re-routed us through Mexico City, then back to Dallas, then no luggage and 60 hours later we made it to Sacramento Airport and nothing to change into. But the airline did give us a free hotel room as we waited a day for our luggage to finally show. All was good but I sure was tired when finally hit Mt Shasta. We left southern Chile on a Tuesday and made it home by Friday. I was never in my life so happy to be back in California in our home. 6 months was a long time away for me and it was so great thinking about all the places we all love and know up around the North State of California!!

 WOW!, Water is low folks, I suggest you get up here to fish this season before July 15th, the rivers are in great shape now.

 Forrest and I went out last week to do a trial run to see how the river is fishing, and any tress that might be down in the river.

 It was so great to be back in California, all the sunshine and fresh smells of spring, in addition to the sounds of happy orioles and sparrows singing their songs as well as the soothing sounds of rapids up ahead in the distance.

 Fish on bro! It sure didn’t take very long to get that trout on the line…

 Nice dentures cutie! So many great trout this season, all the low flows must be perfect for this seasons trout spawn.

 Now that’s one sexy trout if I don’t say so myself. Look at all those freckles and big browns eyes, she should be a cover girl… Way to go Forrest!!

 I think it’s time to get up to Shasta and hook into one of these beauties!

 Then I went out and hooked into 4 trout in one spot, it was a great way to start my fishing season here in California.

 Robert Louis Stephens  is a North State legend from the Chico area, he’s guided on the Lower Sac for years and even built rods and work for Walton Powell, I was really honored to have both Frank Duarte and Bobby on my fly fishing raft on a wonderful weather day.

On the first drift we got a nice hook up and it really never got slow the entire day, both of them really commented on the scenic beauty and how they used to have to do practically a death march in order to access the bets spots on the river.

 Kind of nice to be on the receiving end and not having to guide anyone, Bobby commented.

 Those colors don’t tread folks! I just love the beautiful trout we have in both the Upper Sacramento and McCloud Rivers, wouldn’t you agree.

 Then Frank got a hook up and kept everything even if anyone was counting. Like Bobby, Frank is a real nice character who’s got more connections then a Monday morning pretzel maker. Highly respected by his clientele, the DFG and thousands of would be anglers who call him constantly to gain information and insight on the North State rivers he guides on. But today, Frank was the client sitting on his duff and enjoying hooking trout and laughing like teenagers in a pick-up truck speeding near the Sutter Buttes. We were having real hoot folks!

 We caught trout like this most of the day on small nymphs like size 18 & 20.

 It’s really easy to get perfect drifts from my raft, you float and drift your indicator at the same speed as the current. Many folks just high stick a lot or you can just mend upstream when needed.

  On this corner down by Pollard, California we hooked into this beauty, Frank enjoyed this catch.

 Down a little further Frank hooked into this lovely thing.

 It’s so great to see this river back 100%. There are so many of these healthy, beautiful, lively and hard fighting trout. Put’s a tear in my eye folks, it’s been a nice journey back to normal. Also the general regulations on the river right now is working perfect! Way to go DFG.

 Next Ryan and Robert Cassidy came up to float and fly fish the Upper Sac in my raft, that day was amazing too, the fishing was off the charts.

 Nice trout Ryan, now lets see what dad can catch.

Bob had a nice trout soon after in the pocket water and I knew it was going to be another great day out on the Upper Sacramento River.

Ryan hooked another trout here, it was a great day for him to learn more about nymphing on rivers in Northern California. Flows on the Upper Sac.

 Then Bob got into the action and hooked this native pond star…

 Right now we are seeing a lot of nice trout heading up from Shasta Lake, to escape the low H2O levels and warm temps.

 Then he hooked this Kamloop trout from Shasta lake as long as snake.

 Then the biologist Henry Lomeli from the wild life division of the Department of Fish and Game came up with his father Rene to check out my trip on the Upper Sac.

 Little trout, medium trout and large trout all co-exist together in the waters that start their decent from the creeks at the base of the peaks of Mount Shasta.

 A  river living, breathing and flowing and feeding the state of California. I like to think about that when I’m out there with all of you.

 Rene Lomeli with a very healthy trout, they just don’t get any better looking then this folks, some of the most beautiful trout in the world live right here in Siskiyou and Shasta Counties. 

 Soon after pops had on another nice trout, then it was three nice trout in a row.

 Then we pulled off here to see if we could wade up a trout from shore.

 Then he hooked one towards the back of the run and it took him for a ride down stream.

 Then Rene hook into a nice trout on a deep hole you wouldn’t fish from shore.

 This is what makes fly fishing in California so fantastic, you can regularly catch trout like this.

 Then at lunch we have this terrific spot for you to wade in and catch some trout while I prepare your hot meal.

 In April we guided one more trip in Chile for two days on the Rio Maullin and the Rio Petrohue the fishing was good but not as good as it was last year at this same time.

 Nice colorful brown trout made us all smile that day.

 Lunch was great as always, Carola knows how to cook up something special on every outing.

 A lot of trout the same size that day, but when you’re catching browns who’s complaining….?

 Brenda over on the Rio Petrohue was the first one to hook up on a nice trout, it was the first time she caught a fish on a fly rod.

 Way to go Brenda, see you and Bill back in Chile in Feb 2014, should be a great season can’t wait.

 The countryside of Chile is spectacular with snow capped peaks of basalt and granite and a breathtaking view in every direction.

  Then Bill hooked into a huge salmon that took his fly reel for a scream and broke his hook like nothing?

 Vultures line the river banks as the salmon run produces opportunities for the fortune hunters of prey.

 Just over those granite peaks is the fjords and the Pacific Ocean where the river drops into and many fish access the entry into the Rio Petrohue in the Reloncavi Drainage near Puerto Montt, Chile.

 This is where my client Bill caught 8 trout in a row in this one spot at lunch.

 It was pretty slow day until we arrived here for a nice lunch then this hole treated us like honey.

 It was a great place to have a lot of action. 

 We caught a lot in this size range here as the bite was on. Thanks Bill & Brenda, see you next year in Chile or Belize You choose.

 This is one of my favorite Chilean dishes it’s called Curanto, it’s made of fresh steamed oysters, with smoked ribss, sausage and potato pancakes in a wonderful broth. Carola’s mom makes the best Chilean Curanto ever with ribs and sausages from Modinger’s of Llanquihue.

 Klamath river a little on the slow side right now, we’re waiting for warmer days, less wind and the stone fly hatch. This usually accurs after the first week of June throughout the month into the first week of July.

 Lower Sacramento River Fly Fishing Report - 

The Caddis bite has started on the Lower Sac, and still PMDS and PEDS as well. Throwing # 14 Cinnamon Caddis puppas or Birds Nest is the best bet. Flows increased to 13,000 CFS Tue May 21st. Still finding Good numbers of fish and size. 

The Trinity is going to be 1300 CFS by May 31st and ready to fish. With the flows in good shape so early in the year, its going to be Springer King Salmon heaven.   

The Lower Sacramento is a great choice now before it gets too hot in the mid summer heat. Give Team Trout a call!

CHILE & ARGENTINA TRIPS GOING GREAT, HOPE TO SEE YOU ON THE SCHEDULE FOR 2014.

 The means by which we travel in Chile, our drift boat gets us to the places we want on all rivers in comfort.

 What a great season it’s been on the Rio Maullin as the last few weeks comes to end and we head up to Mount Shasta, California we won’t soon forget all the fun we had this past season here in Chile and Argentina.

 All those great river lunches prepaid by my wife Carola, you know she prepares them with love and a lot of heart is the main ingredient.

 How about the Rio Petrohue in March and April, the fishing has been good and we landed a few whoppers on the fly rod with one of our best clients Andy Swann.

 One day we floated a group of four down the river and Chilean guide Edgar and Andy hooked into a huge King Salmon that ate Edgar’s fly he tied. After about a half hour Andy landed the beast!

 For sure one of the proudest moments for all involved and the pinnacle of anyone’s fly fishing career is to land something like this on a fly.

 We took him home and ate him, in fact I had a little last night for dinner, what a great tasting fish. We always catch and release trout, but a salmon for dinner is what I’m talking about….

 Wilson Griffith, Andy’s friend hooked this beautiful brown trout on the Rio Maullin the next day. Big thanks goes out to Steve, Wilson, Andy & Walter, hope to see you next year in San Martin de los Andes.

 Next for the second time in Chile for a 10 day trip, Davida & Clyde arrived from Tucson, Arizona. This time we decided to do part of it in Chile and most of it in Argentina with my talented guides there. Not before we stopped in Pucon, Chile to go over details about the entire trip and talk about tours as well as fly fishing.

 After a few beers with these fun people we were feeling pretty good about ourselves!

 We made it over the Andes to Argentina and had dinner in a wonderful restaurant in San Martin de los Andes, Clyde and Davida loved it!

 The rivers around Argentina can be incredible, easy to wade and full of trout. On this river you can use a hopper-dropper.

 My guide Jorge out with Clyde as Davida elected to go out with Carola on an organized tour around the area.. Shopping!

 Clyde wanted me to fish, so I fished areas above or below them after they went through before and I caught fish in this very healthy stream a  little low for this time of year. 

After hooking a few nice trout, Clyde, Jorge and I sat down and had a wonderful lunch my wife prepared for us. It was a nice setting and we saw huge Red Deer they call Ciervo walking along the hillsides off in the distance.

 Many nice trout in this river both browns and rainbows exist, come on out and shake a stick folks!

 Lots of food in this river as well as hoppers, Pancora crabs and water boatman live here and feed the large populations of trout.

 There’s a Pancora carb climbing along his apartments and buildings that exist here in crab town.

 That night we made a BBQ and ate like kings, boy the beef, chicken and lamb down here is the best I have ever tasted in my life.

How do they do it here in Argentina?

 The next day Jorge took Clyde and Davida out on the a local river we grown to love. This river has many big trout and all day Clyde had hook-ups!

 He would throw his fly along the edges of the rocks and nice sized trout would come out and munch! A real happy camper indeed.

 Clyde that day had over 30 hits and landed some where around 20, he really enjoyed fly fishing with Davida and Jorge on this special

section of river in Argentina.

 The clients were having so much fun we decided to skip the restaurant that night and have a party together with all the greatest meats from Argentina and awesome Malbec wines. 

 It was a feast people, you have to go down to Argentina sometime if only for the delicious beef and gracious people we enjoy hanging out with! Thanks to Martin & Sabrina! Saludos de Chile, Jack y Carola

 The next day Clyde was at it again loving every minute of it out on the rivers and hooking trout in very good warm weather.

 Even hooked a native perch, now that was weird looking. Davida hooked into a few also then decided hang back wth Carola for a day and do tours.

 Very healthy trout that were transported here from the McCloud River in Northern California in the early 1900′s.

 Then he hooked this healthy brown, what fantastic colored trout. Clyde loved this place!

 Then another, it was a real hook fest folks!

 You can see the countryside is much different from Chile. It’s like a trip from Portola, California to Reno, one in which I took many times with my father Raymond, I love those memories. One I relive every time I go from Chile to Argentina.

 Over in Chile we had a fine day on a private river I have access to guiding on, Clyde hooked a nice trout right away.

 A nice rainbow indeed folks, meanwhile Davida hooked a few of  her own on this river.

We liked this hook up, the water was so clear and glacial, you could see the trout hit like you would in the ocean bone fishing.

 This was trout paradise, the bite was on that day and Clyde’s a great angler, he doesn’t miss very often when given the opportunity.

 Lunch was great that day as we prepared a mountain of different beefs and sausages from Cecinas Mödinger’s of Llanquihue, Chile. Our supplier for our lunches on the rivers here in Chile.

 Clyde and Davida had access to Jamie’s condo in Pucon for a second season together so they invited us to stay with them for 3 nights in this most awesome place on Earth, we enjoyed the incredible views and cooked for them here and went out with them for dinner a few nighst too. Thanks Jaime, I owe you a free float trip on any river you choose in the future, also thanks for allowing me to store my drift boat when we headed into Argentina for a week. We enjoyed meeting your neighbor Luis, he is a great Ambassador for Chile.

 We won’t soon forget our stay at this wonderful resort owned by one of Chile’s finest and friendliest families.

 Next Jon & Diane Rappaport showed up for a second season both here in Chile and a first time visit last season in Mount Shasta. This trip though was based on a focus in Argentina but not before us pigging out on some great food at a local German restaurant in Pucon, Chile. We loved the real German beers available at this place.

 Many dogs are homeless in Chile, they are so friendly and deserve a break from hunger. We always save the left overs from what ever meal we get at the restaurants and go around feeding dogs where ever we see them. Would you consider that too, if you come down here to Chile or Argentina…. We get strange looks at the restaurants, but the servers aren’t that hungry so they don’t realize the importance of saving the world from dog hunger. (Someone has to do it folks!)  JT & CT 

 Could you eat all that delicious food, that is the question folks! Diane really wasn’t sure…

 Can you say.. Yummy!

 I can honestly say this could be the best meats you’ve ever tasted in your life, Argentina knows how to do beef people. It was so fun taking two great groups over into Argentina and both having the best times of their lives.

So I asked our waiter, “What is the best Malbec wine you serve?” And he presented me with this lovely creature in a wonderful burgundy dress. 

 If you’re ever in Junin de los Andes, Argentina don’t miss trying the Ruca Hueney Restaurant. The atmosphere food and staff are simply the best in the region.  I think she said something to the effect of “Where’s the beef dude?!” If you leave here hungry you need to go to one of those hot dog eating contests and rename yourself Joey.

 Ok more lamb? I guess we’ll need some more Chimichurri then… Che!

 John Rappaport of Orono, Minnesota one the nicest people we’ve ever guided anywhere. He and his wife Diane approach life with grace and education. Fine human beings to spend a few weeks with out on the waters of Chile, Northern California and Argentina.

 Jon had a few takes but on this day the bite just wasn’t on. As guides we have this happen and it is out of our control no matter waht river you’re fishing, this happens folks. But Jon said, “Just being here is my reward, the catching is always the icing on the cake!”

 Jon & Diane said this lake was one of the most beautiful places they ever fished in their lives.

 An amazing place to visit and fish.

 That Diane landed some nice trout and this large mouth perch, Jorge was a great guide to be out on the water with.

 The shopping and values at the many stores around Argentina is what also makes the trips so special especially for the ladies.

 The food though is incredible experience too.

 Oh boy!

One day we spotted two condors on the ground eating something, Jorge explained that they are huge and fat these birds can’t just fly into the air, the wind will knock them back down. So they fly off to avoid people like us land some where close to where they took off from then they have to walk up to the top of the hill and fly off the mountain. When I first saw them, I thought they were the biggest turkeys I’d ever seen in my life times three. Wow, they were both huge! These aren’t birds, these are paragliders.. Sounds like some of buddies from the Old G-House in Mount Shasta, way to go Sizzlers!

All these rivers in Argentina are so great to float on this day we floated a section no one else has access to.

It never was so windy and cold, but Jon being from Minnesota thought it was great and never complained. He said it was just wonderful catching all these spunky trout and we both commented that on most rivers, 40 mile an hour winds you wouldn’t catch much.

It was a hook fest folks, one in which we won’t forget soon and Jorge did a great job in tough conditions but we all made the best of the day as Diane was back at the ranch on a tour with Carola.

Living Large in Life – Jon Rappaport, you could learn how to live life fully form this guy as he is genuinely happy and wise in his years.

Diane enjoyed her time out on the water and hooking a few nice trout on her own, a great partner out on the rivers with Jon.

 As fall arrives here in Chile and Argentina the fly fishing picks up as the mornings get cooler and the trout bite becomes more aggressive. Just like back at home in the United States fall is always the best fishing for catching trout and for size.

Timothy Cooper from Australia brought his girlfriend Kylie for a float on the Rio Maullin and a little trout catching.

 Out on a recent trip Dave Dufour came with his best buddy Bob Gufason from San Diego and enjoyed thoroughly their trip with me out on the Rios in Chile.

 Dave caught this wonderfully rare colored brown trout in about 2 inches of water, that we saw hit his streamer as it landed on the surface!

 What a nice brown trout, incredible colors with  brilliant florescent red spots on his side near his tail. This trout was a gold bar from Fort Knox.

Bob Gufason with his nice brown trout catch, talked about possible coming back with Dave to be guided on one of our 12 day trips through Chile over into Argentina.

 STEELHEAD FISHING STILL GOING STRONG IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

 A lot of wild steelhead this season on the Trinity River, pick up a last minute trip from us and you’ll be glad you did.

Next we outfitted Brian & Eugenie Noyes and his entire family at our private ranch river access on the Rio Maullin for a  nice day of fly fishing and his daughters first time fly fishing.

First thing Alexandra caught his nice brown trout on a streamer right by the put in, it always makes the guide happy when we have instant success!

 Now that’s a slab folks, caught on one of my home tied flies I tie to immitate the Pancora crabs int he river.

 This is one fly fishing family, Alex brought her trout in like a pro, I guess you could say she had it in her blood.

 That’s a nice first trout in any river on Earth, what a great brown trout catch.

Under water the trout looks happy to me, probably will go off now and make more off-spring and will make sure they get an education.

Eugenie with a nice hook-up of her own, one of the best fly fishing gals I’ve seen maybe ever.

 A fine German brown indeed folks.

 Recently on a river in Chile our client Mark Lee from Australia enjoyed a day of fly fishing on a local river we guide on.

 Lunch is always fantastic when Carola’s in the kitchen, we think in addition to fly fishing the lunch also plays a critical role in making the day a success.

 We also took Mark, wading one day and he enjoyed this trout he hooked into.

 This one was a nice trout that  lived up to the Chilean reputation for aggressively hard fighting fish that never give up that easily.

 One of our clients out with Edgar this past week had terrific fishing and landed this awesome rainbow Sizzlers!

 Meanwhile, our guides over in Argentina are having a hook fest on a Patagonia Argentine river.

 This brown trout was one of the highlights of the week on a fantastic lake we guide folks on in Argentina.

 But not to be outdone, one of Gabriel’s clients took this brown trout not too long after that!

 What about this seas-run brown Edgar client hooked on one of our private sections of river in Chile.

 And out near the fjords in Chile with a ocean a couple of breaths away, one of Edgar’s clients landed this lunker this past week.

 Also this salmon on a 9 wt. fly rod. The salmon are coming in right now in full force, the rains drive them in large numbers and the trout follow making this time of year the best. The only thing I’ve seen is landing the beasts. “Speak softly and carry a big stick!”

 Dan Vogel came a calling after one of his friends who we guided earlier in the season Mike Hawkins, told him he had a good trip with Mattias and me in Chile.

 He caught plenty of trout everyday and we had a great time together.

 Hooking big fish in Argentina is one of Dan’s favorite past times, but he also enjoyed the prospects of what Chile had to offer.

 We serve fine breakfast’s at our cabin home we have here in Chile, we think you’re going to like it.

 Start the day out right with a nice breakfast them go and hook some nice trout. Now that sounds like a winning plan to me.

 How sweet it is ladies and gentlemen guiding the incredible waters of Chile and sending folks over to be guided by my guides in Argentina. It’s a dream come true!

 Then out on the Rio Petrohue, we hooked a 15 lb plus salmon on the fly!

 We ended up not landing the beast but he had him on for 15 minutes and said, this was the biggest thing he ever hooked into on his fly rod.

 On this night we had sausages and NY steaks called Bife Chorizos, it was incredible!

On another night we prepared a whole rack of lamb we bought for around $15 USD, it was the most incredible piece of lamb I’ve ever tasted.

 Our guide Jorge is the best, with Gabriel and I planning daily where the clients go to, this was another successful trip we are very proud of.

Dear Pit River guides and anglers,

The Pit River Technical Review Group (TRG) will be meeting again in Redding on March 13, 2013. In preparation for this meeting we’re writing to give you a brief update on the latest reports, surveys, and monitoring efforts associated with the Pit 3, 4, and 5 re-licensing process.

As you know, the new flow prescriptions exceeded CalTrout’s recommended flow rates of 200 cfs in Pit 3 and 350 in Pit 4 and 5. Consequently, fishability and accessibility do not currently meet your hopes and expectations.

Despite this, CalTrout still believes that the flow rate compromise reached in the licensing negotiations will benefit fish and the long-term health of Pit 3, 4, and 5. But we sympathize with the guides that have been hurt financially by these abrupt changes. Although we have no current means to reverse the license agreement, we can continue to 1) keep you up-to-date on the implementation of the new license requirements 2) continue to voice your concerns/frustrations to the TRG 3) work with the TRG on potential adaptive management opportunities in the future.

Moving Forward

On March 21, 2012, after meeting with a core group of Pit River guides, CalTrout submitted official comments to the TRG that focused on three primary concerns.

Comments and Concerns from Last Pit River Technical Advisory Committee meeting:

1. Flows, especially in Pit 4 and 5 are well above license condition minimum flows resulting in extremely challenging and unanticipated angling conditions.

2. Sampling methodologies for monitoring relative fish abundance were compromised by high baseflows. This resulted in a lack of comparable data to previous years. Absent this data it is impossible to determine if the new flows are actually benefiting the trout population.

3. Anglers are overwhelmingly dissatisfied with the new flow regime. Angler satisfaction is an evaluation criteria metric to be used as part of the adaptive management process.

See attached for a full version of comments we submitted last year. CalTrout continues to work with the TRG on addressing these concerns in 2013. We will keep you informed if and when opportunities arise to adapt current license implementation requirements.

Angler Survey Overview

The new Pit 3, 4, and 5 FERC license requires an angler and recreation monitoring of the Project Area during the first five years (2011-2015) of the new license-required flow conditions. This survey monitors angler “effort, success, catch rates, size of fish, and satisfaction. Additionally an End-of-Season Angler Survey was created on-line and distributed via email to anglers and an Angler Guide survey was developed to query local fishing guides known to take clients to the Pit 3, 4, or 5 reaches.

Angler Survey Data overview from 2012:

1. 707 angler recreation surveys were distributed during 75 survey days, 229 survey were returned (32% survey return rate)

2. Anglers came primarily from Shasta County, and the San Francisco Bay Area Counties but also from Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington,

3. Fly anglers made up 64% of those surveyed, bait and lure anglers made up 37%

4. 2,573 rainbow trout reported caught, 49 brown trout caught

5. Catch rates: Pit 3) 2.6 trout per angler hour, Pit 4) 2 trout per angler hour, Pit 5) .6 tour per angler hour (98% of all trout released)

6. 67% of anglers responded that Pit 3 velocity was too fast, 69% state that Pit 3 water level was too high, Pit 4 and 5 anglers evenly split with regards to velocity and water levels being too high

7. Pit 3) 63-67% satisfied with overall experience Pit 4) 59% satisfied with overall experience Pit 5) 65% satisfied with overall experience

8. 58% of guides reported for Pit 3,4, and 5 decreases in 1) overall angling experience of clients 2) percentage of clients capable of fishing a reach 3) number of client days fished

9. In 2012 majority of anglers 59-67% were satisfied with overall fishing experience in all reaches

10. 70-74% surveyed were satisfied with size and number of trout caught

Fish Monitoring overview from 2012

1. Article 401 Certification Condition of State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) requires PG&E to monitor aquatic organisms. Sampling began in September 2011; as part of plan PG&E was to review efficacy of the sampling methods and recommend needed modifications

2. 2011 Sampling methods, when implemented under higher in-stream flows, were ineffective at providing results that were directly comparable to pre-license sampling conducted at much lower flows. PG&E submitted a Method Modification Proposal to the resource agencies in June 2012

3. Modifications included: 1) elimination of requirement to compare results to previous studies 2) experimental use of modified sampling techniques 3) development of new index based on new sampling techniques, elimination of requirement to monitor rough sculpin

4. New sampling methods include: 1) elimination of barge electrofishing 2) elimination of main channel snorkel counts 3) continue fry lane snorkel counts 4) use of extended night time experimental gill nets 5) use of hook and line fly fishing samples for mark-recapture estimates 6) use of fyke nets to determine their efficacy for catching large fish 7) use of downstream margin electrofishing to a bag seine

5. River fish monitoring was conducted during September 2012 in Pit 3, 4, and 5. 2012 modified sampling methods were generally effective for collecting margin species and rainbow trout. But efforts to develop mark-recapture population estimates were unsuccessful due to low recapture rates. Gill nets, fyke nets, and electrofishing downstream into bag seine were also determined to be ineffective. Based on these results, PG&E recommends that future fish monitoring be based upon margin snorkeling, margin upstream electrofishing, and catch per unit effort (CPUE) hook and line sampling techniques in all reaches

6. Pit 3 supported the highest total fish biomass (rainbow trout 8.5 lbs. per acre). Biomass declined in downstream reaches (rainbow trout 3.7 lbs. per acre in Pit 4 and .1lb per acre in Pit 5)

7. Pit 3: 2011 catch rates were 4.12 fish/hr verses 2012 catch rates of 2.84 fish/hr

8. Pit 4 2012 rates: 3.3 fish/hr, Pit 5 2012 rates were 2.75 fish/hr

9. Four non-native species were observed during the 2012 monitoring surveys: brown trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and green sunfish

10. 2013 Recommendations: conduct an additional round of hook and line sampling in the Pit 4 and 5 reaches to expand baseline for analysis of effect of Pit 5 whitewater recreational flow releases. Also conduct two additional rounds of margin electrofishing in the Pit 5 reach: one before release and second one after.

Upcoming Technical Review Group Meeting and Comments

As mentioned above, the next TRG meeting will take place on March 13 from 9am to 5pm at the Red Lion Hotel (1830 Hilltop Drive, Redding CA). CalTrout will attend.

 Volcano Osorno (2652 meters or 8700 feet)  a great place to visit while down visiting in the Lake’s District of Chile. Sometimes compared to Mount Fuji in shape, this volcano remains dormant for now happily covered in snow. We love our local volcano here in the Lake’s District of Chile surrounded in part by Lago Llanquihue, Chile’s second largest lake. Some of the other local volcano’s include; Cerro Santo Domingo, Volcano Calbuco, Cerro Bonechero, Volcan Puntiagudo, Cerro Cenizas, Volcan Casablanca, Monte Tronador & Cerro Cuernos del Diablo. All averaging between 1700 meters or 5577  feet to a tallest height of 3491 meters or 11453 feet.

This is one special place on Earth. Beautiful, majestic, transforming and re-defining countryside with maybe the most fresh water flowing naturally left on the face of the Earth.

 And I say to myself…..What a wonderful world!

The stage was set!

So when Chris & Joel Phillips showed up for their first time ever fly fishing, they thought Chile would be a great place to learn.

 Chris started out a little rough but after some on-hand instruction with a little humble insight, Chris was casting out 30 to 40 feet of line. It didn’t take long for Chris to get a take from a hungry trout looking for a free meal.

 A nice Atlantic Salmon was Chris’s first fish on a fly rod, he was amazed!

 In December it rained over 20 days out the month, this has made all the rivers very high and some are still not fishing well but with many choices in the Lake’s region, daily I am talking with Edgar and making calculated decisions based on where the best places are to take our valued clientele.

 Atlantic Salmon average 16 to 22 inches and frequent the Rio Maullin near Llanquihue, Chile.

Pops got in on the action, these salmon are smaller than you would think. They have the ability to live in the river for any amount of time the fish desires. They mainly run in schools and they are not boat shy or line shy, when you get in a school, don’t leave for a while. I have had as many as 22 hook-ups in one area once and 9 double hook-ups in a row is still a standing Jack Trout Guide Service record. (Scott & Dave Chile 2009)

These fish can be a lot of fun, especially for a beginner fly fishing for his first time!   <:((<

 The Rio Maullin has 90% of Chile’s birds living in the trees and mangroves that align the rivers shoreline. This King Fisher watched and followed us down the river for over an hour. It was a real highlight that complimented our great day out together. We would float down to a new section and there he was, like an old lost friend from Portola High school in Northern California, he was hanging out and thinking how he could learn how to fly fish too..

This bird was never scared of us, in fact he was out-right nosey!

This is a clear river, that’s just like a huge spring creek. The only difference is that it flows out of Lago Llanquihue about 50 miles to the Pacific Ocean.

 Chris hooked 3 more Atlantic Salmon here as I prepared our shoreline gourmet lunch.

Pops headed north and was casting fine on the top of the run.

 The Fox Gloves was out in full bloom and it was apparent that summer was making it’s way here soon.

 I cooked up some meats on the shore and the Phillips enjoyed some local beers and we feasted on some great food Carola prepared earlier for us.

 This pan is called a disco in Chile. I never liked disco as a kid growing up but I sure like it here!

 Lago Llanquihue is a great place to visit in the Lake’s District but I must admit the best beaches are located in Llanquihue.

Trout lurking just out from these reeves cruising in out looking for cuisine opportunities. 

 It’s summertime now here in Chile and many are heading for the lake for a cool nice place to swim and enjoy the sunny days.

 Meanwhile our clients are happily catching nice brown trout out on the Rio Petrohue.

Then two brothers called me from Auckland, New Zealand – Cameron & Matt Sumpter – Ready for action!

 And we’re off for our adventure filled day in Chile!  

 This was Cameron’s first day ever fly fishing and Matt was a seasoned vet who knew every remote stream in New Zealand turning his younger brother on to a sport he loved and endeared. That day Cameron hooked the largest trout and Matt hooked many great fish, they loved the Upper Rio Maullin.

 The next day on the Rio Petrohue we hooked even more nice trout and Cameron moved on to an intermediate fly fisher.

The mountains and landscapes down here are quite impressive.

 Matt caught some nice trout at lunch, while Cameron and I had great chats about our countries.

 Check out the list of the top countries to be born in 2013.  New Zealand was 7th /  USA was 16th.

  These trout aren’t huge but the great scenery and all day action made up for the size that day.

We thought it would be nice to take you on a tour of the countryside of the Chilean Lake’s District, this is a tour we offer here in Chile.

 This is Carola’s Niece and Nephews, Ivo, Alexandra (J-Lo) & Sebastian, we’ll bring them along too as they are the future for Jack Trout’s tours and fly fishing guiding here in Chile. 

 The Germans started settling here after 1900 when the Chilean Government gave them land incentives to immigrate here. I’m sure they felt right at home as this area of Chile looks like Germany, Austria & Switzerland. 

 It’s spring here now in Chile so everything is really green and lush from a long wet winter.

 These old German houses are so full of history and the architecture is very identifiable, these folks literally helped tamned the 10th & 11th regions of Chile.

 Chile has 2006 volcanoes this is called Osorno and over to the left is the incredible and our favorite Volcano Puntiagudo. 

What a place, the German town of Frutillar, the Lake Tahoe, California of Chile. The only difference is you can fit 2 Lake Tahoes in Lago Llanquihue as it is Chile’s 2nd largest lake.

 A fun place we highly suggest you visit when touring Chile, or we can take you there.

 Puerto Octay, Chile used to be a bustling town with a brisk tourist business ferrying passengers across Lago Llanquihue until the Pan American 5 highway was built after the 1960 earthquake that registered as the largest earthquake ever 10 magnitude. But the scenic beauty is worth a visit, we highly suggest.

(Stay at the Haase House fantastic museum like hotel with a rich history where the owners German daughter fell in love with a Chilean man but her parents refused to approve the relationship and she died never being married. Ah duh! Sounds like Dirty Dancing to me! They have one room totally dedicated with photos and antique treasures from the 1920′s 30′s & 40′s.  This is a very old volcano called Calbuco, it erupted last in 1961, it has had 16 historical eruptions. 

 This is the countryside looking towards Volcano Puyehue, the last volcano to erupt in Chile. It has calmed down and things are getting back to normal on this very important passage into Villa Angostura, Argentina from Osorno Chile, the main route to Bariloche, Argentina.

 Volcano Osorno last erupted in 1868 and divided Lago Llanquihue into two lakes and formed a new lake called Todo los Santos. 

 Chile means water, the water will become more and more valuable in the future, how Chile protects this water will determined the countries resourceful future. 

 Let us hope those who make such decisions make healthy ones and are not influenced by nearby countries that have much less water and rich natural resources.

 Underwater the trout are flourishing and the water is as pure as the snow from the Osorno Volcano.

 I just bought the waterproof Lumix camera, what a great purchase. 

 The Rio Petrohue is one of Chile’s finest rivers, one of my favorite rivers in the world.

 So I tagged along a fly rod on our tour around Lago Llanquihue and on my 5th cast from shore in my jeans and tennis shoes i hooked a very respectful trout.

 Sebastian was there to help his Uncle Jack land the trout. I’m really proud of these kids, everyday their English is better. He loves Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam and always seems to be humming some great rock tune on his ipod. If my friend JERRY could call Eddie Vedder and get us some tickets for the Pearl Jam concert in Santiago Chile in April we’d really be indebted….(You did write an awesome song for him

 Some of most pristine and pure waters left in the world, time to batten the hatches Chile. 

 One of our favorite places to eat at in Puerto Varas when touring clientele is to take them to Alessandro’s Italian Restaurante.

For steaks our favorite restaurant is in the town of Osorno, Chile called La Parilla de Peppe – The best $15 dollar steak you’ve ever tasted.

 Carola is always impressed by their salads and greens.

 Many huge browns being caught by clients and my guides. I like fly fishing Chile & Argentina in November, December & March & April.

 My head guide Edgar in Chile has been landing some really huge lunkers! Edgar has been guiding Chile for 23 years and knows every section, region and river between Temuco and the Rio Baker in region 11. Wow! He’s as well traveled as the McCloud River Rainbow. 

 Sea run trout are being caught more often in the Lakes District of Chile, why anyone would ever go down to the extremely cold windy barren area around Punta Arenas & Terra del Fuego baffles us all up here. It’s so much more beautiful up here, more for non anglers to enjoy and you’re closer to Patagonia Argentina. There’s a few lunkers here too, especially in March and April when the big sea going fish arrive, but they can be caught here on any day just like in any region of Chile south of region 9.

Our first client of the season was Mike Hawkins of Cincinnati Ohio. Mike told us that Cincinnati has the second largest October Festival in the world, large German population there too! We really enjoyed his good vibes and soft spoken tall mid western words, high integrity, the kind of guy you would want on your team. (Becoming more and more rare these days.) 

 Kind of sad to see this Scottish Broom take over like it has on the Upper Sacramento River in Northern California, but just like  everything here, living things are always subject to drastic changes, Mother Nature rules in the end.

 Such an amazing piece of water, you can see down so far because of the glacial silts that coat the bottom of this lake. We love to take people on tours around the total circumference of the lake, it takes about 5 to 6 hours but many high lights along it’s path of course. 

 In this one spot Mike caught 8 Atlantic Salmon about 15 to 18 inches, then he wanted both Me and my guide Mattias to hook into one!

 Fun stuff, we like to share with you on this private float we have here in the Lakes District of Chile.

 Then Mike went on hooking more and more of them. They run in schools and I remember in 2009 our clients Dave and Scott hooked and released 22 with 13 double-hook-ups! That’s a record that may never be broken.

Butch Cassidy 1901 – flees the United States and heads to

 South America. Argentina * Chile * Bolivia *

Robert Leroy Parker –  (Butch Cassidy)

(April 13, 1866 – November 6, 1908 or possible lived until 1938?), better known as Butch Cassidy, where he got his nick name for being a butcher for a few years in Wyoming, was a notorious American train robber, bank robber, and leader of the Wild Bunch Gang in the American Old West. After a lifetime career of crime in the United States, as well as the thoughts of being apprehended, especially by the Pinkton Detective Agency, forced him to flee with an accomplice, Harry Alonzo Longabaugh, known as the Sundance Kid, and Longabaugh’s girlfriend, Etta Ethel Place, first to Argentina, then around Puerto Varas, Chile (Lakes District of Chile & Argentina) and then to Bolivia, where he and Longabaugh were allegedly killed in a shootout in November 1908. (Unconfirmed though)

Here’s a little bit of the history -

After robbing the First National Bank of Winnemucca, Nevada of $32,640 and a long lived reputation of being a wanted criminal. Parker and Longabaugh (Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid) then fled east to New York city, and on February 20, 1901, with Ethel Place, Longabaugh’s female companion, where they escaped the United States to Buenos Aires, Argentina, aboard the British steamer Herminius, (Which at the same time was transporting many McCloud River trout minnows to South America in metal thermoses, none of eggs survived the trip, but the minnows did.) Parker posing as James Ryan, Place’s fictional brother. There he settled with Longabaugh and Place in a four-room log cabin on a 15,000-acre ranch that they purchased on the east bank of the Rio Blanco near Cholila, Chubut province in west-central Argentina, near the Andes. (Now a great catch & release dry fly river to fly fish full of McCloud River Rainbows!)

On February 14, 1905, two English-speaking bandits, who may have been Parker and Longabaugh, held up the Banco de Tarapacá y Argentino in Rio Gallegos, 700 miles south of Cholila, near the Straight of Magellan. Escaping with a sum that would be worth at least US $100,000 today, the pair vanished north across the bleak Patagonian steppes. ( I’ve traveled through there, very barren like Nevada, they must of felt at home.)

On May 1, the trio sold the Cholila ranch because the law was beginning to catch up with them. The Pinkerton Agency had known their location for some time, but the rainy season had prevented their assigned agent, Frank Dimaio, from traveling there and making an arrest. Governor Julio Lezana had then issued an arrest warrant, but before it could be executed Sheriff Edward Humphreys, a Welsh Argentine who was friendly with Parker and a longtime admirer of Etta Place, tipped them off.  (He was obviously bribed too.)

 Etta Ethel Place & Sundance Kid, the most wanted women in the world at that time.

The trio fled north to San Carlos de Bariloche where they embarked on the steamer Condor across Nahuel Huapi Lake and into Chile near Puerto Varas. (This is location where the first McCloud River Rainbows were dumped into the Rio Limay, outside of Bariloche, Argentina.) By the end of that year Butch & Sundance left Chile and were back in Argentina to rob again, on December 19, 1905, Parker, Longabaugh, Place and an unknown male (possibly Harvey Logan) took part in the robbery of the Banco de la Nacion in Villa Mercedes, 400 miles west of Buenos Aires, taking 12,000 pesos. Pursued by armed lawmen, they crossed the Pampas and the Andes and again reached the safety of Chile near present day Pucon. (All  the places Carola and I tour people & fly fish folks! Also back then Argentina was one of richest, if not the richest country in the world that’s why they kept returning, the banks were full of money.)

On June 30, 1906, Etta Ethel Place decided that she had had enough of life on the run and was escorted back to San Francisco by Longabaugh where she was never from again and is as much a mystery. Parker, under the alias James “Santiago” Maxwell, obtained work at the Concordia Tin Mine in the Santa Vera Cruz range of the central Bolivian Andes, where he was joined by Longabaugh upon his return. Ironically, their main duties included guarding the company payroll. Still wanting to settle down as a respectable rancher, Parker, late in 1907, made an excursion with Longabaugh to Santa Cruz, a frontier town in Bolivia’s eastern savannah. No complete verification was ever made that Butch & Sundance were ever really killed near the southern boarder of  Bolivia and Chile and many family members, doctors and friends say that Butch Cassidy returned from South American in the 1920′s and worked and died in Johnnie, Nevada until his supposed death around 1936 or 38?

Carola and I plan to visit a restaurant near Bariloche that claims Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid stayed there before leaving for Chile right on Lago Nahuel Haupi –  Though we’d rather be remembered for being goodwill ambassadors in both North &  South American as fly fishing &  tour guides and law abiding citizens, this is a very fascinating unsolved American history story.

Lago Nahuel Huapi – The lake Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid with Etta Ethel Place crossed over into Chile in the 1900′s to avoid being arrested. The river that dumps out of this lake is where the first McCloud River Rainbows were transplanted in South America. Like Alaska, Argentina and Chile are attached by lakes and rivers so it wasn’t hard once they were transplanted to migrate from river to lake, then lake to river and eventually the oceans. The McCloud River Rainbow is a survivor by nature and it soon learned even how to adapt by leaving rivers connected to the oceans and quickly enter another fresh water system to survive. I have seen it with the many volcano eruptions down here, the river is toast and full of volcanic ash, yet a few years later large trout are back in the river that was previously destroyed and the only explanation is they turned their gills for the ocean voyage and survived the journey.We all have the ability to turn on the survivor instinct in us and the McCloud River Rainbow is the most well traveled, heartiest trout ever invented, they tried other trout from other rivers but none survived like the ones from far Northern California. No trout were indigenous to South America, the Rainbows came from Northern California and the Brown Trout came from Germany & Scotland, the U.S. Government sold them to the wealthy Argentines.

When I think back to those early 1900 days when Buenos Aires, Argentina was the capital in the world for theater, music, art and wealth. 50 % of the Latin America’s GDP  and 7 % of the worlds total trade with it’s incredible export of beef & wheat as thousands of European immigrants entering the country with that same dream of security and prosperity. The incredible culture they brought with them and the ties to Italy, Germany & Spain and those immigrants who brought that all with them in hopes of a better life, it really fascinates me, sometimes I go back in my mind and relive it. If you were wondering why did Butch & Sundance head to Aregtina as well as the McCloud River Rainbow now you know why.

Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants 2012 World Series Champions! – Kobe Beef is a die hard fan, when he’s not out being my deck-hand!

 Over on the Klamath River local  Mount Shastaian, Emil ……  was equally happy about this huge salmon he caught on a 7 wt fly rod! The next time you go into Ray’s Food Place, in Mt Shasta say hi to Emil. 35 years of serving the town of Mount Shasta with a smiling face! (Emil spelled backwards is LIME, funny he likes margaritas…?)

 Tomas Kohn came out from the East Coast and enjoyed thoroughly his day on the McCloud river dry fly fishing and steelhead fishing on the Klamath River. Tomas Kohn is a former Professor at Boston University School of Business. Don’t you just love people who create new things and become entrepenuers, better yet I like praising the people who teach it! My father was a school teacher for 33 years in Portola and  a fishing guide for 16 years, he always encouraged me to create and start businesses as early as 16 years old.

 I always feel smarter when I guide brainy guys like Tomas Kohn. I’m thinking about everyone on the East Coast and I just heard to give blood

call – 800-Red Cross. Carola and I will give blood and the next 2 days. If this is the first time the stock market has been forced closed since 1888, this is bigtime people, time to step up to the plate!

 John & Diane Rappaport from Orono, Minnesota came out to fish and visit after fishing with us for a week in Chile this past season down under. They loved the Shasta area and enjoyed staying at the Mount Shasta Resort, but moreso they loved this ghost bridge from 1916 that stands proud down above Dog Creek on Fenders Ferry Road.

 That day the fishing was real good and Diane hooked many trout on her 5 wt. fly rod.

 John and I picked back up where we left off in Chile hooking nice trout and laughing about the experience as the day unfolds.

 When we get to talking about history, movies, stories about Diane & John growing up with Bob Dylan and fly fishing this next season in Chile and Argentina,

everything just turns back & white.

John enjoyed his first time fishing on the on the Klamath River and that day we hooked trout, steelhead and salmon. Sure would be great to see the dams taken out on the Klamath River the banks are really getting over grown and the blue-green algae is thick throughout the river system. This river needs a good

scrubbing and a river blow-out that would turn the rocks over thus returning gravel bars and easy spawning grounds to the upper sections on the Klamath River. For a salmon it’s like making love on interstate 5, hard to turn over gravel let alone keep it humming in this sickly green river!   You think this year was a good salmon run, wait until you take down that wall.

……… take down that wall! 

(Just my opinion after guiding on the river every fall for 21 years) 

 Diane with another lunker on. The salmon run approximately 163 miles to this section where they spawn, if the dams are taken out on the Klamath River it would be the largest project of its kind ever in the United States. Many of you say to me,” I thought I heard that the dams issue was approved to be taken out?” That is true but the California Water Board approved a one year lease to Pacific Power on July 21st 2012.

Toxic algae found in Klamath River; chinook salmon’s fall run not affected

Water quality officials have posted signs on the Klamath River from Copco Reservoir east of Interstate 5 to near Highway 101 on the coast warning people to stay away from blue-green algae in the water.

The signs warn swimmers, boaters and other river users not to come in contact with the toxic algae.

The algae can cause skin rashes, eye irritation, nausea, fever, mouth ulcers, flu-like symptoms and even liver failure, nerve damage and death in rare cases.

Siskiyou County environmental health officials were not available to comment. But county Supervisor Marcia Armstrong, whose district includes the Klamath River, said there have never been any reported illnesses from the algae in the river or its reservoirs.

The fall run of Chinook salmon, expected to be one of the largest in decades, has not been affected, said Clayton Creager, a scientist with the California Regional Water Quality Control Board.

“It hasn’t resulted in a fish kill. We are concerned, but right now they are holding their own,” Creager said of the spawning salmon.

The warnings do not include the Klamath River estuary at the Pacific Ocean, Creager said. There is no warning against eating the fish.

Craig Tucker, Klamath coordinator for the Karuk Tribe in Siskiyou County, said the algae blooms have put a damper on the tribe’s annual world renewal ceremony, also known as Piky’avish ceremonies.

The river and the salmon play a large role in the ceremonies, which have been going on since mid-August, Tucker said.

“It’s a real drag when you’re supposed to be celebrating the renewal of the Earth and you look out in the river and you see all this algae in the water,” Tucker said.

The tribe’s spiritual leaders have to bathe in the river during the ceremonies, putting themselves at risk, Tucker said.

The algae growth shows the need to remove dams on the river, which he said are one of the causes of the blooms.

Creager said the algae blooms have become an annual event in the river and are typically caused by high summer temperatures and low water levels in the river.

The algae first blooms in the upstream reservoirs — Copco and Irongate — and then works its way downstream, he said. The state water board issued a news release  July 24 about algae blooms in Copco and Irongate reservoirs.

In September 2002, a massive fish die-off in the Klamath River killed 34,000 fish. From that event, numerous agencies began monitoring the water quality in the river and based on the water quality set “readiness levels” about conditions in the water for the fish.

The current readiness level is yellow, which means officials need to have a heightened awareness for fish disease and death and that agencies need to share information more frequently, according to the Klamath Basin Monitoring Program website.

The “fish mortality response plan should be dusted off and folks ready to respond with personnel and resources if the situation escalates,” the website says.

There are four readiness levels — green, yellow, orange and red — with green the lowest level of concern and red the highest.

Anticipating up to 380,000 Chinook salmon swimming up the river to spawn this fall, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation officials have increased water releases from Trinity and Lewiston dams to flush the river and help prevent the spread of a fish disease known as “ich.” The Trinity River flows into the Klamath.

Creager said the added water should help the fish.

“This condition would have been worse without those pulse flows,” he said, referring to the higher water flows down the Trinity River.

 Lunches on the river were exquisite and John and Diane were impressed with the scenic beauty of  Northern California.

 Over on the Klamath John caught one of biggest fish he ever landed on a fly line.

 Back in time 1924 Dunsmuir – NY   Actual photo from Dunsmuir Park.

In 1924 after winning the World Series Babe Ruth came out on a train touring and playing in nationwide exibition games from coast to coast, one in which ended in the little town of Dunsmuir. (900 attendees) The actual photo above was taken at the Dunsmuir basebal park that was built in 1922, and has now out lasted Yankee Stadium that was built about the same time but was demolished in 2008. That day the Babe, hit 2 home runs and one Reva Coons of Dusnmuir states was hit out over the wall into the Sacramento River and was never found. Reva Coons late husband Bones Coons was a famous local babseball legend who passed in 1973. He was honored that day in April as he played on Babe Ruth’s team against players from Dunsmuir, Mount Shasta and Weed. Burton Bones Coons and Babe Ruth’s team won  that day and later the Great Bambino was quoted by Reva as saying,

 “To everybody (and that means everybody) in Dunsmuir, Calif.
We don’t know yet how to tell you what a wonderful time we had in Dunsmuir. When it comes to beautiful girls, wonderfully fine fellows, and the real two-fisted spirit of California — little Dunsmuir gave us more laughs, more hospitality, more thrills, and more things to remember than any place between Broadway & Shasta.”

Last year a team of experts came to the Dunsmuir and deteremined that the ball Babe Ruth hit that day went 604 feet and landed on the property at the Cave Springs Resort.

Babe Ruth so loved the Northern California area that he kept his promise and revisted the Shasta area and brought Lou Gehrig with him. They also came back to Dunsmuir and met up with Bones & Reva Coons and the gang. Later the Lions Club invited them to fish on the Klamath River and they were hooked on California for the rest of their lives. (Ruth & Gehrig also loved to duck hunt in the Central Valley near Corning)

For many sportsmen out there now is the right time of year!

 But my secret tip is with all the anglers on the Trinity and Klamath Rivers I would consider fly fishing for trout and steelhead on the Lower Sacramento River.

If you’re a fan of warmer fishing conditions this time of year the Lower Sac can be a sure bet bite!

 I know that section on the Lower Sac near Sacramento RV Park, way to go Forrest!

Back on the Trinity how about a king salmon on an 8 wt fly rod! We are booking trips right now on the Klamath & Trinity Rivers. Jim Gorman has been fishing with us on the Trinity River since 2006.

 What a healthy trout, probably just gobbling up those salmon eggs… A real hoarder isn’t she.

 I’ve been fishing with Rich Creeggan since 1998, he comes up both in the spring and fall. Now his son David who has fished with me in past stories had a baby boy and named him Alex. I’m sure Alex Creeggan will be up fishing with me before too long..

 That day Richard caught 2 nice salmon on his 7 wt. fly rod.

 Then he landed a hatchery steelhead, you can tell because the fin next to his left index finger has been cut off.

 Then he landed a real big steelhead around 7 lbs, it was one of his greatest catches ever.

One more salmon for the road! Thanks again for coming up Rich, look forward to guiding you and David in the spring.

 Tim Brandabur went out with me over the summer called me up and I set him up with my guide Forrest on the Trinity River.

 The first trout you ever catch on a fly rod you will never forget!

 What a wonderful experience for a youngster to learn fly fishing, the memories out on the river with pops is a special place away from the modern distractions of text’s and the general rat race.

(Some folks know they need a break and go, some folks will never know why, thus they never go.)

 One of the two things I like most in life is seeing my passport get stamped & adding a new specie on my fly rod!

 Pops got into the action also, when he caught this trout, but like most dads I guide they are not there to catch. They are there to see what their kids are catching and they fish vicariously like their parents did for them. It’s a wonderful torch that’s being passed folks and it all starts with you and me and all the guides in the fly fishing industry. It’s important that this next generation of kids have hobbies in the outdoors and get out and exercise in the woods once or twice a week. My suggestion is this – You heard of Earth to Wood Contact on your home, it’s not a good thing and it leads to dry rot. Well I propose for the new generation of kids being raised that parents initiate a program I call – Earth to Kid Contact. Another words, children stay away from pavement as often as possible and get on the Earth, it’s healthier.

Not enough Earth to Kid Contact and you end up with dry rot attitude, from not getting out and enjoying the most natural and free resources we own… NATURE & FAMILY!

 All the great folks we guide understand and lately fishing has been really great.

 Over Labor day we enjoyed the Classic Mount Shasta Car Show – It’s nice to see old American classics never die and new American classics like my Chilean wife are here to stay!

 Come on up to Mount Shasta, Lower McCloud River opens this week but call 530-926-4511 USFS first because the information coming out on the McCloud River has been confusing with no real time-line or good information being offered.

Sure wish the USFS Forest Service had enough sense to put a sign up on HWY 89 & Squaw Valley Road saying the ROAD PAST BOAT RAMP TO ASH CAMP – AH DI NAH & THE NATURE CONSERVANCY – CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. I have drove up there 4 times only to be denied what waste of gas and time.

 That day Tim caught over a dozen trout, it was a good birthday indeed.

 Shadee & Cortland are both college students at the University of California Los Angeles UCLA.

They were pumped about their first ever fly fishing experience!

 Right off the bat, Shadee hooked up!

No doubt enjoying herself as she hooked numerous trout on her first experience.

 What a great couple of upcoming superstars who enjoyed their time at the Middle Falls on the McCloud River. Listen up all college students, this is a great place to retreat to,re-boot the Intel Pentium Processor in the brain, then you head home all ready to handle anything that life throws at ya! 

 A nice brook trout is always a fine catch. Thanks to the Mount Shasta Hatchery the oldest fish hatchery in the United States 1888. Go by there sometime and visit the hatchery in the town of Mount Shasta.

 Courtland caught a few on this rock and then the trout started to rise to dry flies.

 I have been fishing for years with Joan B. of the Golden Gate Fly Casters of San Francisco. She loves to take big trout on her fly rod as she has been known to travel all over the world to far away places such as Russia to land her next great catch. On this day we had our best day ever fly fishing and floating on the Upper Sac as she landed 3 huge trout and had on a few others and landed even more that were small but spunky.

 This Joan is so much fun! Carola just loves her and we had a real hoot that day!

 Joan – CAN YOU SAY LUNKER!! This lady knows her stuff, I have landed big steelhead with her on the Trinity River.

 This trip was fantastic for Joan, there would be no way she could wade the this river nor would it be safe. Joan was right at home in our trout raft.

 Heck who needs waders and boots, just wear your shoes or not!

 Good Signs – In 2009 when I was floating the Upper Sac in my raft, I would go a week before seeing a train heading south bound loaded with wood from the Pacific Northwest, now looking back on it, it is like a litmus paper for our economy. Housing was super slow and we were on the decline in general. The other day I saw 5 trains in a row south bound loaded with wood for construction. One after another, like a force of nature wanting to rebuild America, one new job at a time as each passing box car promised with its loud screeching noise to my shagrin. Like two enemies that finally understood one another, I looked up at those train cars and got a chill down my spine, for the first time in 3 years I truly felt the economy was improving in the most important area, housing. Yea folks, all the signs are there. Low interest rates, low home prices and the wood is on the way! Next time you see a south bound Union Pacific Train coming down from the Pacific NorthWest

give a thumbs up and think that American is heading the right direction. Just look at what Union Pacific’s stock has down this year! Indeed it isn’t all bad out there, look for the good signs.  JT

Don loves seeing those south bound trains heading from Oregon down into California loaded with lumber from Roseburg Lumber. Makes sense he works there! he agrees things are picking up and it looks like we could truly be on our way to recovery.

But right now catching this trout is the supreme importance.

 Forrest guided a number of our clients on the Lower Sac this past month.

 The Lower Sac is on fire right now folks. Call me if you want to schedule a trip in Oct or November give me a  call.

 We could try for a COUPLE DOUBLE or a COUPLE OF DOUBLES … Well you know what I mean! (Good job Forrest!)

 I just love that Lower Sac, aren’t we blessed to have so many great places to fish in the North State.

I’ve always said, “If they never Dammed up Shasta Lake, the Rivers Runs Through it, never would of been filmed in Montana!” (McCloud)

Trinity River Steelhead - 

Lunkers galore on the Trinity River, hope you make it up this year.

 Chile season started on October 15th when the Rio Maullin opened, on November 15th the Rio Petrohue opens. Edgar has already started guiding and it looks to be a great season in Chile.

We would like to thanks all the folks who have already signed up for this season in Chile! BIG BROWNS DOWN THERE!

 It will be great to be out guiding again with Edgar and Carola.

 Nice hard fighting trout are plentiful on our private runs.
