I looked at into my backyard and all I saw was white. The storms had finally hit with more storms on the way! I thought to myself how badly we needed this weather. Last year I only offered my raft fly fishing trips on the Upper Sac for one month. The river was the lowest I had ever seen by June and I closed up shop and took my raft over to the Trinity River way too early. Being from Portola, California originally, I never minded growing up with cold weather and snowy conditions. in fact, I always enbraced the coming of winter with all the great things it offered to me as kid and a teenager.
But looking out my front door, the icicles were starting to form and I knew it was nearing the time I leave for my travels down south. For the same folks that use my services in Northern California, call for my adventures in distant places like Argentina, Chile & Belize. So I started to pack and get ready for my first adventure in a place so dear to my heart. A magical almost surreal oasis, where the sands are white and the waters are every shade of blue and green your crayon set ever knew.
So I fired up the FJ Cruiser and kissed my two cats goodbye, then threw my bags full of gifts, computer, cameras and of course fly fishing gear for salt water species in back and headed out of Mt Shasta. Another storm was starting up and I felt like I dodged through a window that would transport me into another world.....Could I be so lucky? I sure was appreciative not only to be leaving, but also when I thought back and realized what a great year 2007 was! All the guides who worked for me had a great season, and it looked like we turned a big corner in the guiding chronicles in Northern Cal. Folks who used Jack Trout Guide Service were very satisfied and were telling friends! What more could one ask for, we worked hard for you, had fun and because of this, repeat and referral business was our reward! Thanks to all who refer and use us again!! As the plane was decending I could see nothing but the green mile. It looked warm and inviting and I started to get excited. I couldn't Belize it!!!
The plane took another turn and I saw a series of cayes off in the distance where some bone fish and permit were lounging waiting for my fine Umpqua flies they hadn't ever seen before.
One more turn and we landed the plane.
The next morning the sunrise on the ocean was incredible.
I looked out from my balcony and the ocean breeze touch my face with it's delicate brilliance. The zen was pre-determined by a force that formed the oceans and reefs way before I came along. I´m just one infidecimal second in the hours of time, enjoying every minute of my on existence earth.
I went out for a bike ride in the warm Central American sun and came across this beautiful flowering shrub. How many colors can you count?
I parked the bike and headed to check out the ocean. Looked enticing....
What's the chances the person who owns this house has seen Pink Floyd in Concert? I'd sure like to attend this guys party, might be some great margaritas served!
I wished I lived in Tiuana, eating barbecued iguana.....(not really, it just always sounded funny).
This was amazing, this cactus has taken over this tree like a boa snake!
A friend told me this palm is called a Travelers Palm, because it stores water in the core of its stocks and travelers would drink water that was stored inside.
The next day Lloyd and I were off early! 6am we hit the Sittee River and then busted out into the ocean waters at full speed....I had my 7 and 10 wt. fly rods with reels equipped with floating, intermediate and sink tips.
We were heading out to Blue Grounds Range, one our favorite places to jump permit and bone fish when off in the distance, Lloyd spotted birds diving! Anytime this happens on any part of the ocean, anywhere in the world this means big fish are lurking and feeding graciously unabated! My heart started to pound and Lloyd started to move in slowly as the birds continued to hit the surface with Vengeance and the fish below got more and more active. We saw a king fish hit the surface and we knew it was a school of nice sized kings!
I took my 10 wt fly rod and tossed a minnow pattern that Mike Foster tied for me, something grabbed it and I was in for the fight of my life! Like Old Man and the Sea, there I was forever seeing my line go into the backing like Jaime Summers was on the other end....(too bad my name wasn't Steve Austin).
That fish had ate his Wheaties that morning! By the way, I used and intermediate line that sunk just under the surface.
Wow! What a killer fish and a great eating fish to boot! This fish was not going back folks....
Then the feeding frenzy got even more desperate and I felt a little gitty, I wasn't in Kansas anymore Toto.
Lloyd got so happy he about did a back-flip in the boat!
Lloyd the true all-around fly fishing flats guide. The guide who can always see the fish before you do. Lloyd the guide who is everyones friend except those living in salt water. I have worked with other guides internationally, few are as professional, dedicated and as knowledgeable about ones waters. Lloyd Nunez your guide and my guide when were in Belize.
Another cast and something hit my fly that was turbo charged! As it neared we could see that this king fish was massive for being caught on a fly rod.
I thought it was a dolphin it was so big!
The King has left the building!
Then Lloyd caught one and I went into a daydream thinking about my customers who I had sent to Lloyd after Christmas. They had spent most of their time out at Glover's Reef catching bones and I had relived their experience through the photos and the happy email they sent me aftewards.

Lee had the time of his life, catching bone fish with his family on their vacation.
On the boat or on the flats, Lee Kayser caught bones and learned a lot about fly fishing in the ocean.
Pops soon got into the action. (Sorry if we disturbed your sunning folks!)

Clarice, Lloyd's wonderful wife, cooked us up a local Garifunian dish called; Hudut. (whodoot) The mash is called plantain. You dip the plantain with a small amount of king fish in the coconut milk sauce. Wow what a delicious hearty meal. You can taste the health in every bite.
The next day it poured rained in cement truck buckets, so I read my favorite author John Lescroat. http://www.johnlescroart.com . He happens to be a customer also..Imagine that! It was great to just kick back and read all day for once.
The next day I found this hammock on the beach and continued to read The Suspect.
Lloyd checked on his boats and came back home with that eternal smile of his. Is there anyone or any family happier on Earth I ask?
I went down the block to check in with the Jaguar Reef Resort and have breakfast with a great view.

We wonder if you can handle gift certificates. We would like to give someone a cert for two days of guided fly-fishing, not sure what water or what time he would like. He is an experienced fly-fisherman, and is familiar with the fishing in the Upper Sacramento, McCloud, Pit, Hat. I wanted to thank you again for a wonderful two days fishing the Trinity. We were a bit startled to see how young you were when we first met at the Fly Shop, but you proved to be one of the best guides I've worked in my life of fishing. You're head and shoulders above 90% of them. You have incredible professionalism and a love and an enthusiasm for the sport which is great. Keep up the excellent work. I hope we can fish together later in the year.

OUTDOORS REPORT: FISHING A STRONG CONTRIBUTOR TO THE ECONOMY A study released yesterday by Cal Trout indicates that California's anglers spend well over $2 billion a year on fishing-related items and activities. Going by today's warped concept of money, with our various arms of government spending billions of our tax dollars, it's a challenge to convey what $2 billion really means. But here it goes. Written out, it looks like this $2,000,000,000. That's two thousand million $1 bills. Someone once did the math and figured it would take 34 years, months to count $1 billion in cash, so double that for $2 billion. It would basically take a lifetime for someone to count the amount of money spent each year on fishing in California.... ...The state should, the report said, give high priority to habitat protection and maintenance, which would increase present and future economic benefits to the state's economy. PROSED KLAMATH DAM SETTLEMENT DISCUSSION TULELAKE, Calif. - A proposed Klamath Basin water settlement was discussed at a special meeting of the Tulelake Irrigation District board of directors Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 2, but participants continue to adhere to confidentiality agreements. "People know that there's a confidentiality agreement and that remains in effect," Paul Simmons, the irrigation district's attorney, said before the group went into a closed executive session. He said the group would not have any announcement Wednesday or Thursday, when a second meeting was held north of the California-Oregon state line in Merrill. The TID, the largest irrigation district in the Klamath Project, was created in the 1950s. SCHWARZENEGGER STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS MISSES ENVIRONMENTAL OPPORTUNITIES While we had hoped that Governor Schwarzenegger would use the State of the State to roll out important new programs regarding green chemistry and better fire planning, the speech was largely devoid of details.
As expected, the Governor led with last Fall tragic Southern California wildfires. One of the key lessons from those fires is that we need to get smarter about how and where we build. If local governments continue to approve building projects in areas where the state is expected to provide fire protection, costs and loss of life will continue to increase. Rather than describing a vision of proactive planning to protect lives as well as wildlands, the Governor focused exclusively on thanking the heroes. We join in lauding the Californians who stepped up during the crisis, but we were hoping for more proactive planning to prevent future crises. Unfortunately, Schwarzenegger continues to push for the building of more expensive dams as a solution to California's water problems. Thanks for all the nice pictures on your blog. The link to my rental in Montana was especially nice. Now my whole family knows how crazy I am!
I was thinking about your guide business on the way home and it occurred to me that you could develop it into a nice business. As you know you will not be rowing forever and the time will come when letting the young men do the heavy lifting will be the best plan. It would seem you could organize your guides into a more cohesive group similar in structure to a partnership, maybe a LLP (limited liability partnership). You could get group rates for health insurance, liability insurance, discounts on gear, etc. You could have a central scheduling department that would get that monkey off your guides back. A single marketing plan could benefit everyone. I can imagine you branding your own gear. You could create a code of ethics and professional standards for all guides to follow. This could be a very successful and lucrative business. Do not make the mistake of selling cheap. Your guides are the best and should demand the highest fees. Make everyone else second best, and cheaper. The smart money will realize that you get what you pay for, and you don't want the cheapskates anyway. Remember to choose your customers. Also, avoid overhead. Make it as much a virtual company as possible. Partners and contractors are preferred over employees.
I really think you have a great personnel philosophy that will guide and form the partnership and make it the dominate guide organization in California and beyond. It would be great to spread it into Montana and the other Rocky Mountain states.
Lucky is anyone that can get paid to do what they love. You have the personality, the brains, the experience, the contacts, and the drive to make it happen. I am sure that Jack Trout, LLP. can do anything you want it to. Where there is effort, the universe will provide.

Happy New Year Jack Just checked my email and saw your update. The picture of me with my bent flyrod brought back instant memories of the great float we had. Even though I did not land him, it was a great feeling to just play him for a while. Like all true Raiders fans say after the season is over." just wait til next year! " I will set the hook when my indicator gives me the signal. I am so glad that Dave's steelhead was the sizzler of the week. Again it was a great trip and watching Dave catch his first steelhead was worth the trip. We will be seeing again. Oh, by the way that maple donut was really good on Sunday morning. Our flight into Santiago will be on Feb. 29th @ 6:30 am. We would like to tour the city with your "guide" that entire day. Any suggestions for a hotel that nite?
On March 8th we will stay overnite in Porta Montt and will also need a place to stay. The next morning, March 9th we would like to visit the island and see the penguins. Our flight out of Porta Montt that same day is @ 2:20 pm.

Hi Jack, Happy New Year to you also. Thanks for sending the great blog! You really are a good "picture gatherer" and can show what's going on better than most. I was freezing watching the steelheads being caught, but really enjoyed loking at the pictures in my 75 degree , South Florida home. Have a great Belize trip! Caught this 41", 31 pound snook two weeks ago in a tiny canal in western Broward county (Davie) fishing for peacock bass. Had a 6' rod, ten pound test and a 2/0 kayle hook with no leader! One hour fight traveling several hundred yard up the canal and ending up in the weter up to my neck to finally get the snook in. One of the better stories of my 50 year fishing career! Also sending picture of my wife, Zina, with a 28" snook caught last Friday in one of my secret spots. We caught and released 20 between 20 and 30" in a two hour period of time!
