My two cats Oreo and Katie out in front of my house. I adopted these cats from the Siskiyou Humane Society in Mt Shasta. I have always had such great luck with all the pets from there and so have my friends. If you have room and time and are responsible maybe it's time you shared a little love with a pet. I live in the snow belt for Mt Shasta so I see a lot more snow out where I live but it's tucked away from civilization just the way I like it. When I get off the river, I just chill out in my neck of the woods. (Cats live inside, just outside when the sun was out). jt

I was one happy camper when Bob Mankin and Rick Otto came to visit me from LA. I had guided them in 1999 in Chile and now 7 years later, here they were in the midst of fishing with me on the Trinity River. I thought it would be fun to have dinner at the Strawhouse in Big Flats about 15 minutes from Weaverville. The steaks were awesome and so was the wine, a bottle of Luna that was given to me from Mike Hendgehold of Luna Wineries from a previous successful guide outing. (Thanks Mike)! We talked about old times in Chile with Juan Ramos at Lago Pollux, and talked about hooking some nice steelhead on the Trinity the next day. We had a great buzz and our bellies were full, all we had to do now was catch some steelhead....

We fished some key locations to no avail. The water was too cold and the fish just weren't biting in the early morning. But Bob and Rick kept fishing cause this is what they love to do!

Then as the sun started to come over the hill, I heard a cry from Bob that he had a fish on!!

A nice Philly indeed!

I think that's bigger than anything we caught in Chile! (See Dorothy was right, There's no place like home)!

It was then Rick's turn to land a steelhead!

Right-on Rick awesome hook-up in the dead of winter!

The mornings are cold, but the skies of blue and the imminent thoughts of catching another steelhead just around the corner, burns another cord in the souls of our desire. The Trinity, so magnificent in all its glory, as it winds its long tail down the steep mountainess canyons until it introduces itself to the Klamath thus losing themselves to the oceans that lie below waiting with our same desire.

Another guide trip another deer!

So let's review here what makes up a good steelhead location?

Here's Bob with another steelhead on. Can you see how a steelhead would naturally hold up against a bank that has a drop-off or a hole at the top of the run, with a medium speed current. (People out from Montana, Idaho & Wyoming refer to this as the "white-fish water"). When I looked very close at this run you could see that even a beaver is trying to cut down a tree to make a better habitat for the steelhead and to keep them happy and contained. (That's like a beaver investing in futures).

Understanding clues and signs out in nature will help you find steelhead and the water they thrive in. I look for eagles, Heron and Osprey. They are detectors that steelhead are migrating or holding near. Of course reading the water is the best clue, but that's what you pay me for. The flows can change over night and so can holding steelhead from one trip to the next, so understanding the river and how steelhead live and migrate will increase your success.

Bob Mankin, CONGRATULATIONS YOU'RE MY SIZZLERS OF THE WEEK AWARD WINNER!! CONGRATULATIONS SIZZLER!! GREAT ANGLER AND YOU AND RICK ARE GOOD FRIENDS!!

Nice bank leads to another great hook-up! Way to go Rick Otto!

Wow! Did you get a license plate # on that??

In the boat out of the boat, what ever works I say!

Rick and Bob, thanks so much for coming up I had a great time with you two. Thanks for all the dinners!! 4 steelhead per day not bad!! Jack Trout

Here are a couple shots...the sunrise is a great shot of early morning fishing on a rising tide! you can post that one...I took it after I scared a school of bones away - at least I caught something! Rick By the Way... I am never too busy for any of your referrals. <http://www.brokersmls.com/images/agent-photos/piperrick.jpg> Rick Piper RA, ABR, Fine Homes Specialist <http://mail.pruhawaii.com/txtlstvw.aspx?LstID=a2cb0bc8-1f7c-4d6f-8b32-c36786c363e9> <http://mail.pruhawaii.com/txtlstvw.aspx?LstID=a2cb0bc8-1f7c-4d6f-8b32-c36786c363e9> Prudential Locations LLC Email: rick.piper@pruhawaii.com Cell <http://mail.pruhawaii.com/txtlstvw.aspx?LstID=a2cb0bc8-1f7c-4d6f-8b32-c36786c363e9> : 808-371-5551 Direct: 808-739-4163

Aloha, I actually live on Oahu, but I have fished for Rainbows over on Kauai... Check out the local Trout Unlimited Website for photos ( www.tuhi.org) (funny thing is don't look at my dads...cause there only of Shasta area- ha!) Anyway - the trout location is near Kokee and I think Kipapa Gulch (might be wrong on that one) - not easy access by any means. I am sure through TU I can find someone to hook you up with over on Kauai. There may be some Bone fishing over there as well. If there are some flats or shallows, a rising tide and you have an 8wt...you are in business...check out this photo of my guide/buddy showing off the biggest bone (O'io) fish I have seen... I hope you all are well- winter has hit here (brrrrrrr 72 degrees!) went surfing last night. :-) Rick Piper

That bone fish could probably tow a sturgeon from SF Bay to the Hawaiian Islands!
(I always loved the sugar cane fields and C & H Sugar, I've had some fine times in my younger years on the island of Kauai. Thanks for sharing that with us Rick, I needed something warm to show the folks out there)! Jack Trout

Jeff Garcia's dad Bob Garcia, of Gilroy California, are planning a trip with Jack Trout Guide Service in 2007! He listens to me on Sundays, on KNBR 680am "the sports leader" out of San Francisco on the Fishing Report with Brian Hoffman. I just got off the phone with Bob Garcia, (Jeff's father) and he was very excited for his son Jeff after Philly's win over New York. So now he and his wife are heading down to New Orleans to watch the Divisional playoffs against the Saints. Wow! Great stuff! Jeff Garcia is so in his element leading a team with his kind of offense, I am a big fan of Jeff Garcia after seeing him have miserable years with Detroit & Cleveland and now to be leading the Eagles like he did the 49ers, but with more wisdom and a fight that doesn't quit folks! Jeff Garcia is right now one of the hottest football players and he's a local boy born and raised right here California! Bob Garcia is so excited and happy, all his former players are calling him from 23 years of coaching college and high school football himself and congratulating him on Jeff! Way to go Bob and Jeff Garcia!! All I can say is go Jeff Garcia! I'm not a Philly Fan, I'm a Jeff Garcia Fan!! See you in my boat I hope after the Super Bowl!!! ALL THE LUCK AND PRECISE EXECUTION JACK TROUT
(Did you know Jason Sehorn went to Mt Shasta High School and played football for the M.S. Bears)!

After leaving the Trinity, I met up with Bob McEwan and Gary Cummings on the Klamath River. These are the two characters that went to Chile with me in 2004 and had a great experience. Now they were back and Bob hooked up immediately and we were off to the races!!

Bob played him a while then landed the super charger!

Nice trout Bob! Bob McEwan reminds me of Rocky Raccoon. Watch this classic homemade Beatle video and come back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB4v-GZo3hQ

Gary landed a few also but all in all, things were very slow on the Klamath due to cold weather.

Always fun to fish with Gary and Bob, they're like family to me!

Bob with another big steelhead that got off, but we saw him and he looked to be around 6-7 lbs.

Could this be the stolen ATV I read about in the newspaper?? I later reported it to the Siskiyou County Sheriff so they could get it out of my office. I was most concerned with the fuel getting into the river. Whoever drove this into the river and left it, I hope you catch the norovirus you peckermyer. That's just unacceptable!! (We must change this mentality or we will for sure lose the salmon in the Klamath River). Jack Trout

The winter on the Klamath shows us pictures that would amaze Ansel Adams, in a world that is naturally black and white.
Thanks again to Bob and Gary for coming up! See you in my raft next in the spring. JT

I leave you with a wonderful shot of the Trinity, may your winter or summer be a good one!

EMAILS FROM YOU:
Hello I am interested in getting information on your rafting trips. I saw them on the guide show yesterday morning. Thank you.
Becky Kincade
I really enjoy your pictures so much. The picture of Mt. Shasta you have titled "NEW YEAR'S DAY 2007 ON MOUNT SHASTA" is so wonderful! Which side of the mountain is it? Do you have any that views the mountain with snow from Dunsmuir? Sheila
Albany, Oregon
Jack!!!
Just put the check in the mail to you for this fabulous trip!!! Thank you! Jamie and I are ready to fish... but we can be patient!
Now, tell me where we should make reservations to stay?
Looking forward to fishing with you!!!
And have a great time in Chile
-Kate Spellman
Glad to hear we're on for the 4th consecutive year of JT and the raft (Cave Springs, Vietnamese food, etc.). I had a wonderful, Thanksgiving steelhead adventure with Trout on the Trinity. We will have sunny skies and 2,000 cfs on our float, I predict. Hope all is well in Albuquerque. You can even fly into Redding, which is what I would do. Since I pass all the aforementioned airports on the way, I can pick you up at any of them. Just let me know which, and I will plan accordingly. Thanks for touching base. So far, '07 is starting where '06 left off, @ucking great! See you in June, if not sooner Jim Collins
Jack
I am planning a trip to Chile for the month of April. Can I set up a fishing package with you? What is the fishing season in Chile (Regions X and XI)?
Thanks.
James Fox
Dude!!!! You missed a killlller party at the Purple Place in El Dorado Hills. We rocked the place. As in the song, Juke box hero, " It was a sold out show". Sold out to about 75% hot chicks. Kinda like when the fishin' so go you have to bait your hook behind a tree. NO JOKE!!!!
Don't miss the next one.
R. Mills of the R. Mills Band
PS: hope to see you soon!
What kind of fishing is there in the next couple of weeks if I were to come up for the day Is the Trinity, Lower Sac ? Bruce Carlson
Thanks Jack, Just got back from Bozeman. Got out one day. Laces on boots froze so I had to leave them on and keep fishing. Left yesterday. 2 degrees for a high. Al Heitz
Jack I was wondering if you trip to Chile is booked. And if not would a rookie like myself be able to go. I fly fished in alaska about 8 years ago, I am green. Maybe a local trip would be better for me. Let me know what you think , looking for an adventure. You stayed at my cabin with Tim family. Steve Martinez
Jack, I always enjoy your stories, keep them coming. I am just now starting to market my newest product Levitate" Yarn Indicator Floatant". Do your clients fish with yarn indicators? If they do I would like to send you a sample to try out. Let me know. Denis Peirce 530/432-4999
