Usac horseshoe 2006:

What a nice summer this is shaping up to be! Now that the high spring-time flows are over, the river levels all over the North State are at a perfect level heading into fall. Usually we have very hot temps this time of year, matched with low water levels making the fishing darn right tough. Not the case this August, as we are catching lots of trout, some small, some medium, and always a few ginormous...!I'm heading to the Red Hot Chili Pepper's concert on Thursday, then head up to the mouth of the Klamath Friday morning. Call me if you would like to join us on the jet boat. We also can drop you off at your riffle and pick you up later or you can sea-kayak back to our camp!! If you'd like you can take your fly rod and fly fish gravel bars as you float down the river in a sea-kayak.(some experience necessary) Hope to fish with you this weekend give me a call 530-926-4540.

JD Smith 2006:

Jerad Smith known by most of his freinds as J.D. had a great time his first time fly fishing. He caught fish right from the start and before long he was really liking what the sport had to offer. I mean what could be better, being out in the great outdoors, getting in the river and feeling the cool mountain stream roll along his legs and the tourqouise colored water of the McCloud River, simply the most beautiful river in California. Yea, I guess you could say J.D. was in a state of zen.
JD Smith McCloud River:
Not bad Captain!
Caitlin McCloud River:
Caitlin, his girlfriend was equally as enthused to be out on a river catching trout for the first time! Caitlin said right from the start, she wanted to a find fish, see a fish, then cast and catch that fish..... Well with that comment I was impressed. I mean, she hit upon a humans basic instinct of being a "hunter-gatherer". She explained in one sentence why we do it, and she had never done it before? That feeling, that need to fish, hunt or capture something and do it like we did thousands, even millions of years ago was so cool to me. She had a look in her eyes, she wanted to see the game before she went after it, but not only the game, she wanted to see and identify the individual trout, and then catch it. Why? Why do we stare at the ambers of a camp fire? Instinct Sizzlers, INSTINCT!

Trout illusion M R 2006:

So we left J.D. as he reeled in another trout and headed to an area I knew had trout Caitlin could see. As we headed up stream we came to a pool that was slow and immediately I could see trout near the surface feeding in the late afternoon on emergers. Caitlin got very excited and got to into casting position.
Caitlin trout time!:
I put on a size 20 Micro-Mayfly and Caitlin took a few cast until the trout that was cruising so close to us, it could nearly be tapped on the head with the rod tip. Then it hit on the 3rd drift, and Caitlin was excited as the trout raced and darted to get away, but to no avail as Caitlin reeled in her quarry as happy as a primitive cave-girl on a Geico commercial!
Caitlin trout time! 2:
Nice trout Caitlin!
Caitlin trout kiss:
These are the times I wish my name was just Trout! Lucky bugger! (Caitlin's a keeper J.D.)!
Caitlin McCloud River 2006:
Standing proud on the McCloud River! Nice job indeed, your ancestors would be proud of you! More so if you ate the trout raw right there on the spot!! (just kidding all you carnivores)
Caitlin Upper Sac!:
Next we took Caitlin on the Upper Sac, where she hooked more trout and had a marvelous time!
JD Smith Baa-by!:
J.D. had fun hooking trout at this perfect trout hooking location! I would like to thank J.D. and Caitlin, I really had an excellent time, hope to see you in the fall.
Eakle Bro!:
Sam enjoyed this great place to fly fish!!
Eakle trout!:
Nice trout Sam Eakle!
Steve Eakle:
Pops had a great time hooking trout on the McCloud River using a stimi-dropper!
Steve Eakle trout 2006:
I like when we catch these tourquoised colored trout! Is this just camouflaging, or is it another strain of trout that is related to the steelhead that used to run up the river before Shasta Dam? I've read lots of reports that the steelhead runs in the McCloud River were huge back in the day and the steelhead were blue-backs, is this a Blue-Bow...?
Mt Shasta Farmers Markt.:
Meanwhile, over in Mt Shasta the Farmer's Market is hopping!
Eakle trout on brother!:
If your thinking of learning to fly fish, we would like to instruct you! We guarantee you catch & release trout, and learn the effective basics of fly fishing. But most of all, we'll take you out to secluded pristine places where nature rules!
Steve Eakle trout on brother!:
Like father, like son.
Eakle Berry!:
There's real fruit taste in every box!
Eakles like eagles!:
The Eakles standing on top of the world! (The Eakles have landed)! Great to fish with you two. See you in the fall for some big steelhead!!
Valerie Buck!:
Valerie dragged her fiance Jim Buck out for their first fly fishing adventure! Of course Valerie caught all the trout this time. Everytime we looked up she had a trout on.
Jim and Valerie Buck!:
Jim came over to help Valerie net her trout!
Valerie and her McCloud Rainbow!:
Wow! What a great day with Valerie and Jim Buck, even though Jim didn't catch a lot of trout he was just happy to be out with Valerie in tim-buck-two! (Hey, where the heck did tim-buck-two come from)? Jack Trout and Jim Buck, we should have our own reality t.v. show!
Lower Sac Smith:
The Lower Sacramento River has been red hot! I have been experiencing the best trips I've ever had guiding this river, and the trout population just keeps getting better! Casey Smith sure enjoyed his day in which he caught trout all day!!

Lower Sac Release 2006 !:

Nice healthy rainbows that average around 16"'s. I love guiding the Lower Sac, California fly fishing at it's best!

P Smith L Sac:
Parish Smith will tell you, if you want to catch a quality trout get in Jack Trout's Willie Boat and head for the Lower Sac!

EMAILS FROM YOU:

Here is a long explanation of Timbuktu as copied and pasted from http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~wldciv/world_civ_reader/world_civ_reader_2/leo_africanus.html El Hasan ben Muhammed el-Wazzan-ez-Zayyati was born in the Moorish city of Granada in 1485, but was expelled along with his parents and thousands of other Muslims by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492. Settling in Morocco, he studied in Fez, and as a teenager accompanied his uncle on diplomatic missions throughout North Africa and and to the Sub-Saharan kingdom of Ghana. Still a young man, he was captured by Christian pirates and presented as an exceptionally learned slave to the great Renaissance pope, Leo X. Leo freed him, baptised him under the name "Johannis Leo de Medici," and commissioned him to write in Italian the detailed survey of Africa which provided most of what Europeans knew about the continent for the next several centuries. At the time he visited the Ghanaian city of Timbuktu, it was somewhat past its peak, but still a thriving Islamic city famous for its learning. "Timbuktu" was to become a byword in Europe as the most inaccessible of cities, but at the time Leo visited, it was the center of a busy trade in African products and in books. Leo is said to have died in 1554 in Tunis, having reconverted to Islam.

Hi Jack,

I met you on the lower sac friday- I was in the pontoon boat at the launch. Sounds like you like the McCloud. I've never done real well there and would like to try a guided trip in October if you have a day available. During the week is the best fer me, October is pretty open for me now so i'd like to book it whenever you think prime time is. if you pick a date I'll send you money to confirm. a few years ago I netted a 7lb brown for my buddy on the McCloud and would like to go when the big spawners may be up from the lake.

also any chance yer free fer a lower sac full day drift friday sept 1 ? i'm gonna fish that day and can probly spring fer guided trip if yer available thanks dave earl

Jack, Thanks again for two super days. The many trout recharged my batteries. Gregg and I are already looking forward to the 10th and 11th of November and many great steelhead with Team Trout. Keep your tip up. Mike Foster

Hi there Jack,

This is Suzi Humphryes - we spoke yesturday on the phone. I am so excited that you were able to accomodate this fishing trip for my fiance and myself for Sept. 3rd - it is my birthday present for him...we have been talking about doing a fly fishing trip for quite some time! The drift boat idea sounds very serene & relaxing to me. I am a 100% beginner with fly fishing...and my fiance Fred has fly fished before, but it has been a really long time for him. Here is our info: Suzi Humphryes Fred Miner

I am interested in giving my husband a fly fishing trip as a gift. He may bring a friend, can you email me about costs, avail for Sept? I would be looking for a 3 day trip, and he would need equipment (beginner). Thanks, Alicia Bright
Jack

Iÿd be interested in doing the Lower Sac, but Iÿd want to be looking to dry fly or dry-dropper. When and where would we go to do that? I donÿt want to nymph with weighted flies or throw streamers unless I absolutely have to!

I could break away for a day between now and the 29th. Then I have a little time between the 17th and the 28th of September, and Iÿll have the end of October and into November. What are your thoughts?

C. E. Patterson

Great shots. Going to Italy for two weeks from August 30th. Hope to join you for the first time later in the year.

All the best and tight lines.

Alan Walker.

PS Keep those emails coming.

Jack

We would like to float/fish the lower Sac for two days the last week of September. We are available Wednesday the 27th, 28th or Friday the 29th. We would prefer to fish the 27 & 28 but if you are not available we could do the 28th and 29th. Last year when Ken DelMonte and I fished it with you we were with the guide that works for you who lives in Redding, great guide but I don't remember his name.

We would like to do the float that starts in the fair grounds in Redding or at least that is where I thought it started. This year I will be with a person who I sit on a board with whose name is Neil Koenig.

Let me know if you are available otherwise I'fll have to call the Fly-shop to see if they are and I don't want to fish with them if I can fish with you or one of your guides.

The attached picture is of me giving you a big hug last year because you are the best guide in No Cal.

Frank Balog

Frank Balog great customer!!:
Hi Jack, Three of my friends and I plan to float the Trinity in December in hopes of landing the special steelhead that will be running. Do you guide that area? Do you float it? Do you have other guides as we will need two drift boats? Look forward to hearing from you. Please send the specifics. Thanks Al Heitz

#1 Never ever leave your pet behind when evacuating for ANY reason be it a hurricane, a fire, or a man made disaster, even of you think you will be back soon, Hurricane Katrina has taught many, that is a fatal mistake (although most people have already forgotten that and still did the same thing during Hurricane Rita) and at LEAST 600,000 pets suffered, drowned and died of starvation and dehydration when there simply weren't enough rescue groups available. As hard as it might be to put a small or large animal in the car with you, PLEASE just figure out a way and put them on your lap if you have to, they depend on you to protect them and not chain them up to suffer and die. It should never and will never have to be a choice between your pet(s) and your kids, you figure out a way to get EVERYONE to safety, including your pet who is your responsibility and also a member of your family, otherwise you should not own a pet in the first place if you don't see it that way.

#2 Please adopt a pet from your local shelter instead of buying one from a pet store. There are many great pets waiting for a home but 80% end up being put to sleep because so many people end up buying pets that come from puppy mills where the animals are tortured, forced to bread 24/7. Google.com: "Puppy Mills" and you will understand. Help stop puppy mills by putting them out of business and help stop thousands of animals from being put to sleep every day and adopt a beautiful friend from your local shelter today. Most shelters have pure breeds as well, but I prefer mutts myself. Just 1 adoption by you will make 100% difference in the life of that pet. Please also consider adopting a mature pet over a puppy or kitten, mature pets are usually more at risk of being put to sleep and in most cases a mature pet will already be house broken which is better for you. And remember once you have taken the responsibility of taking a pet, be kind to it forever, give it a better life then it previously had, in most cases it has been abused by a previous owner. If you can't take the responsibility, don't get one as it will hurt the pet in the long run when you decide you don't want to keep it.

#3 NEVER leave your pet in a place you would not leave a baby in, such as a car when the temperature outside is hot or cold since a car will heat up or cool down really fast to an extreme temperature usually worse then it is outside and leaving a window cracked open wont help, its is a myth- even if you think you may only be gone for a few minutes, those few minutes make a huge difference on the inside. As well do not leave your pet chained outside for more then an hour in same types of temperatures. They have fur, so imagine yourself in that kind of temperature and how you would feel being chained outside for hours in it, and then imagine wearing a fur coat during this time- as well you should remember that asphalt gets hot, so put a bare palm to the asphalt when it gets hot before walking your pet, if it burns your palm, it will burn their paw pads when they are walking on it so try to acclimate them to pet booties if at all possible when conditions are really bad.

#4 If in circumstances of last resort you decide to post a listing on craigslist to give your pet away, consider the fact that 70% of those you get responses from will NOT BE with good intentions, even if they sound and look like the nicest and most trustworthy folks on the planet, they are professionals and know what unsuspecting owners want to see. Once they have your pet because you trusted them when they brought "their" 10 year old kid with them, your pet will very likely end up being used as live bait for dog fight training, or sold to labs for scientific experiments, and you will never know, you will just hope for the best and want to believe you did the right thing. So think very carefully before even deciding to make that listing, you might just decide you should make every attempt possible to keep your pet with you after all even if it does soil that nice new carpet a few times a day, you are better of investing a few bucks and taking your pet to a pet behavior specialist which will almost always solve the problem behavior of your pet.

Thank you for reading and please DO take all this to heart, and forward this to anyone you know that also owns a pet or is thinking of getting one. Verna
