**STEELHEAD ARE IN AT ALL LOCATIONS ON ALL STEELHEAD RIVERS, CALL US TO RESERVE YOUR DATES!** Mark Easton on S. Platte: .
Took a trip out to the South Platte River this past week and the fishing was hot! My friend and customer Jim Clayton invited me to this private stretch of river located about 45 minutes east of Colorado Springs.
Fish by the hundreds!:
I really liked this river because you could see trout everywhere! These fish could be caught on drys, nymphs and streamers. The hatches were small mayflies and caddis, and I found myself using size 18 flies or smaller. The river is loaded with Cutthroat, rainbows (Mccloud River Rainbows transpalnted in the late 1800's) Cutt-bows and browns! Wow! it's like a city with all different kinds of nationalities. (Can you see the big one?)
S. Platte River Canyon:
The top of the property was like a spring creek, downstream, the river flows into a granite canyon and becomes a free stone river with lots of pocket water and perfect sized boulders for trout to hide behind and feed. I thought overall the river was perfect for fly fishing and the canyon was epic to say the least. I like spring creeks don't get me wrong, but being a guide for 14 years on the McCloud River I'm kinda bias towards boulder gardens such as this. Besides, it's like bobbing for apples and halloween is right around the corner!
S. Platte River Canyon2:
Most of the time we were using a stimulator with a size 18 Copper John.
Mark Easton Trout:
Mark Easton came out from Ohio to meet up with Jim and I and the adventures began! Mark is a big Ohio State alum & fan and was happy that day when he caught over 20 trout and Ohio State crushed Iowa!
Watts Fishing Camp:
This is where we stayed when we were on the property, and I would like to thank John and Linda Watts for opening their home to us! John and Linda are Jim's parents-in-Law, they were happy to have us! What a great place, it reminds me of the Portola area I grew up in as a kid. (Portola on HWY 70 near Quincy)
Mark Easton fish on:
Fishing behind these boulders remained productive all day. The mornings were slow until the small baetis mayflies appeared every morning at about 10am, then the fish went on a feed.
Mark Easton Happy Camper!:
I asked Mark what he thought of the place and this is how he responded! Well congratulations Mark, YOU'RE MY SIZZLER OF THE WEEK AWARD WINNER! CONGRATULATIONS SIZZLER! JT
Jim & Mark:
Jim hooked up in the small lake on this nice McCloud Rainbow! Way to go Jim, thanks again for inviting me out, it was a great retreat before the steelhead start rolling in on Northern Cal Rivers in October.
Granite Rocks in Colorado:
I really was impressed with these pink colored granite rocks. It was like Barney Rubble could come walking out from behind at any moment. I wish I had these beauties in my yard in Mt Shasta!
Danny Devito & Trout!:
On the way back home to San Francisco Airport, I sat behind Danny Devito and his wife Rea Pearlman. It was funny to see the both them together. Danny was reading his script for his next movie and Rea was reading the New York Times. Danny ordered a beer on the plane($5 bucks) and a minute later he was heading back to the restroom. It was like being in one of his movies, I laughed when he walked by, I just couldn't help it! After we got off the plane to claim our luggage, a crowd of folks were taking their pictures and Danny said, "San Francisco is so beautiful," at the top of his lungs!" They weren't bothered at all with all of us in awe, in fact they were so down to earth and looked to be in their element. I mentioned to Danny that he and Bill Murray were my favorite comedian actors from the silver screen. (OPM was a classic movie, so was Ruthless People) He said thank you very much and truly acted honored for that accolade. He then saw I had a camera and said, "Hey, do you want to take a picture with me?" To which I said, "You betcha!" So let's hear from you! Who are your top 3 favorite comedian actors? Here's mine: Danny Devito (Other Peoples Money), Bill Murray (Stripes/What About Bob) & Robin Williams (Bird Cage/Mrs. Doubtfire)
Carl W Klamath:
Carl Winterstein came to float the Klamath and we had a great day together! The fishing was slow in the morning but after 11am things started to heat up and the bite was on!
Carl Wild Steelhead!:
We caught this wild half pounder and had a few salmon hook-ups also on the fly rod. *UPDATE STEELHEAD ARE IN ON ALL RIVERS IN ALL LOCATIONS. WE ARE ALSO CATCHING FRESH PRE-SPAWNED SALMON WITH 8 TO 10 WT RODS RANGING FROM 5 TO 20 LBS. GET UP HERE NOW TO JUMP IN ONE OF OUR DRIFT BOATS AND START YOUR ADVENTURE!** OCT 4TH UPDATE JACK TROUT
Kent Brown 1st Trout!:
Kent Brown of Mt Shasta hooked into a lunker trout right before the new Sun Dial Bridge in Redding on the Lower Sacramento River. It was his first hook-up on a fly rod and he battled this fish for more than 10 minutes before it threw the hook and said later days! It's hard to keep real big fish on using a size 18 Micro Mayfly. We caught plenty of smaller trout, but this was the one that got away! jt
Bob Reed:
Kent's sister bought him the gift certificate and Bob Reed of Mt Shasta came along for the ride!
Bob Reed trout:
Nice trout Bob! Tell R.J. hello for me, would like to fish with you two when he's back in the area! jt
Aaron Martin Klamath:
I'm not kidding the steelhead are really in, call us to book your trip, we want to guide you into success! **stay tuned next week as we guide on a private section of the McCloud River, Hook-up on some steelhead and salmon on both the Klamath and Trinity! Many Rivers to You, Jack Trout P.S. The summer is over now and I will be reporting weekly again. Made it to the PG& E relicensing meeting last night in Redding. I'm trying to get PG&E to put the cubic feet per second flows below McCloud Dam and at Ah Di Nah on the world wide web! With gas prices, who wants to drive all that way just to find out it's unfishable due to high flows! They acted as though they were interested? I'd also like to see the min. flows higher from the dam to Hawkins Creek. jt
