WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND MT SHASTA SKI PARK
530-926-8600!! www.skipark.com August 15th, 16th and 17th**
When August hits you'll find me in canyons, nymphing and dry fly fishing the boulder gardens. Why you ask? Because trout like the cooler temps that stay shaded in the Summer months in additon the rocks provide cover. The canyons of the Sac, Pit and McCloud Rivers provide this for the trout. Bob Quillin here enjoyed hopping around catching trout in this mazed like, adult video game called fly fishing pocket water.
Meeting the customer early is a great way to be successful in the Summer. 7:30am to 1pm then break and come on out after 4pm and go til dark. You can see the early morning fog that is in the picture, this is rare for August. We are having September weather conditions for August and this is making the fishing fantastic! jt
Looking for V's when fishing pocket water is an idea location to catch trout. See, the trout have predators like Osprey, King Fishers and Otters, the trout lay in currents for cover and rush out
to grab food along the edges of faster currents. The V is the area between two currents where fish feed the most.
On the far side of the the farthest rock Bob caught a nice trout
while high sticking his nymph. I think it's so important to only have the indicator on the water when high sticking. It slows the nymph down so trout can see it and keeps you attached to the flies for those subtle hit days, when the trout are hitting fast and furious.
Just a nice picture of success, way to go Bob!!! Shasta the Trout Dog on top of her game!
Rob Jensen has been fishing with me for a few years now and is a kick in the pants to be out with for a day on the river! He and his wife Anna are getting ready to pack up Bay Area life and head for the hills. Rob and Anna are moving to Mt Shasta within the next year
and I'm glad to welcome them as neighbors when they do!!!
Rob Jensen is such a character! He always rents the vacation rental next door to my house, so after the guide trip we hang out, HAVE A BREW and B.S. Rob congradulations, you're my Sizzler of the Week Award Winner!!
Rob's release was a gentle one!!! Klamath Steelhead is still early, look towards the 3rd week of September for the Steelhead to be present up at Iron Gate Dam. I do want to report that the Bureau of Reclamation is keeping the water at a good level!! a 1000 CFS
is wonderful thing and the Trout, Steelhead and Salmon wanted me to thank you. Also we have a new head of the department in Klamath Falls with the Bureau of Rec, Cecil Lesley, he says the water level is going up to 1200 at the end of the month!!! I LOVE YOU MAN!!!
The McCloud Lake Dam was built to help combat against the glacier silts that impacted the river for years from mud creek, a appropiately named creek that starts it's origin on the east side of Mt Shasta. The Hearst family had Mud Creek in the 1930's diverted on their property so it wouldn't blow out the Upper McCloud River. Here we are in 2003 faced again with this dilemma.
What if PG&E allowed the water to just come over the top of the shoot that runs adjacent to the dam? The Lake is clear on the top and PG&E is pulling the water from the bottom of the lake where the silt is heavier than the lake water. Let me know your thoughts, it cost's our community greatly when this river is unfishable!! jt
Here's the slide that the water could run over, I know that in the 1930's many fish like Steelhead, Trout, Dolly Varden and Salmon were
killed when these silts ran down the river. Imagine yourself in a big forest fire breathing toxic smoke, this is what the trout are going through right now with this mud their breathing. Come on PG&E
give us all a break and release the water on top to the fish, you'll sleep better at night and so will the trout! JT
Here's McCloud Lake, notice the water at the top is clear the silt is down at the bottom where PG&E is releasing it into the McCloud River.
Have a great week Sizzlers! **NEXT WEEK A JET BOAT TRIP UP THE MOUTH OF THE KLAMATH, STEELHEAD, BEAR, PREVIEW LOOK AT THE CAL SALMON, TRINITY, SMITH AND MORE! MANY RIVERS TO YOU
